The figure no one saw coming

Walmart lost 9 percent of its market value in one fell swoop. The biggest drop since 2022, and not because there was a scandal or a fraud case. Simply because revenue growth fell to its lowest level in six years.

That is the kind of news you easily let pass if you don't own Walmart shares yourself. But Walmart is not just any retail chain. It is the place where tens of millions of Americans do their weekly grocery shopping, and therefore also the place where you are the first to see when those Americans start struggling financially.

Why the gas pump is the culprit

The company itself pointed to high gasoline prices as the explanation. That might sound like a detail, but that is precisely why it is so telling. Gasoline is not a luxury product you can cut back on. You have to go to work, to school, to the doctor. If those costs rise, there is simply less left for the rest of the household budget. And that budget is being spent at Walmart by precisely the group with the least financial leeway. Not the wealthy American buying their groceries at a premium supermarket, but families who are already watching their pennies. When that group starts cutting back, it is not an isolated incident. That is a signal.

The K-shaped economy is tilting

In recent years, there has been much talk about a K-shaped economy in the United States. The top end people with investments, stocks, and real estate benefited from rising stock prices. The bottom end, dependent on salary and savings, felt inflation primarily in their wallets.

Walmart's figures show that this bottom end is now truly starting to crack. This is not a new phenomenon. Prior to the 2008 crisis, it was also retailers who were the first to show weakness among ordinary consumers, long before the rest of the economy noticed it. In that sense, Walmart acts as an early warning system.
