In 1912 A tornado with incredible velocity ripped into downtown
Houston TX breaking the water table and giving the city
its first natural waterspout.
In 1923 Residents in the eastern U.S. awoke on "April Fool's Day"
to bitterly cold temperatures. The mercury plunged to
34 degrees below zero at Bergland MI and to 16 degrees
in Georgia.
In 1946 The Scotch Cap Lighthouse on Unimak Island, Alaska, was hit
by 2 earthquakes in 27 minutes...then obliterated by a tidal
wave.
In 1987 Forty-five cities across the southeastern U.S. reported
record low temperatures for the date. Lows of 37 degrees
at Apalachicola FL, 34 degrees at Jacksonville FL, 30
degrees at Macon GA, and 22 degrees at Knoxville TN, were
records for April. A tornado touched down briefly during
a snow squall on the south shore of White Fish Bay (six
miles northwest of Bay Mills WI). A mobile home was
unroofed and insulation was sucked from its walls.
In 1988 A powerful spring storm produced 34 inches of snow at Rye,
CO, 22 inches at Timpas OK, 19 inches at Sharon Springs KS,
and up to 35 inches in New Mexico. Severe thunderstorms
associated with the same storm spawned a tornado which
caused 2.5 million dollars damage at East Mountain TX.
In 1989 Up to six inches of snow blanketed the Adirondacks of eastern
New York State and the Saint Lawrence Valley of Vermont.
Up to a foot of snow blanketed the Colorado Rockies.
In 1990 Thunderstorms produced severe weather in Texas, from southern
Arkansas and northern Louisiana to southern Georgia, and from
northern South Carolina to the Upper Ohio Valley during the
day and evening. Thunderstorms spawned a tornado at Evergreen,
Alabama, and there were more than eighty reports of large
hail and damaging winds. Thunderstorms produced baseball size
hail north of Bastrop Louisiana, and produced damaging winds
which injured one person west of Meridian, Mississippi.

In 1975 The northeastern U.S. was in the grips of a severe storm
which produced hurricane force winds along the coast, and
two to three feet of snow in Maine and New Hampshire.
Winds atop Mount Washington NH gusted to 140 mph. The
biggest snowstorm of record for so late in the season
paralyzed Chicago IL. Up to 20 inches of snow fell in
extreme northeastern Illinois, and 10.9 inches of snow
closed Chicago's O'Hare Airport.
In 1982 Severe thunderstorms spawned fifty-six tornadoes in the
central U.S., including seventeen in the Red River Region
of Texas and Oklahoma. The tornadoes claimed thirty lives,
and injured 383 other persons. A violent tornado near
Messer OK left only the carpet tack strips on the slab of
a house it destroyed, and carried a motel sign thirty miles.
The tornadoes also raged across Arkansas from the southwest
to the north central sections. 13 fatalities were reported
across Arkansas. The most significant tornado in this
outbreak occurred at Paris, Texas.
In 1987 Eleven cities in Florida reported record low temperatures
for the date, including Tallahassee with a reading of 31
degrees. The low of 48 degrees at Key West smashed their
previous record for the date by 13 degrees.
(2nd-5th) A late-season snowstorm set the North Carolina
state snow record with 60 inches at Newfound Gap, and also
showered 6 inches of snow in Birmingham, Alabama...and gave
Mobile their first ever April flurries.
In 1988 Thunderstorms produced up to nine inches of rain around
New Orleans, Lousiana, causing 18 million dollars damage.
A tornado caused three million dollars damage at Slidell,
Louisiana.
In 1989 Strong and gusty winds prevailed from California to Colorado
and Wyoming. Winds gusted to 50 mph at Lancaster CA, and
reached 85 mph at Berthoud Pass CO. Snow and high winds
created blizzard conditions in the Colorado Rockies.
In 1990 Thunderstorms produced severe weather in North Carolina and
Virginia during the afternoon and evening. Thunderstorms
produced golf ball size hail, and spawned a tornado near
Chester VA which caused half a million dollars damage.
A storm system produced snow and gale force winds across
northern Michigan, with 8.3 inches of snow reported at
Marquette. Temperatures in the north central U.S. soared
from morning lows in the 20s and 30s to afternoon highs
in the 60s and 70s. Eight cities reported record highs for
the date, including Havre MT with a reading of 77 degrees.

In 1955 Record snows fell in north central Wyoming and south central
Montana. Billings MT received a storm total of 42.3 inches,
and on the 4th reported a record snow depth of 35 inches.
Sheridan WY established a 24 hour snowfall record of 26.7
inches. (2nd-4th)
In 1974 A "Super-Outbreak" of tornadoes ravaged the Midwest and the
eastern U.S. Severe weather erupted early in the afternoon
and continued through the next day. Severe thunderstorms
spawned 148 tornadoes from Alabama to Michigan, most of which
occurred between 1 PM (CST) on the 3rd and 1 AM on the 4th.
The tornadoes killed 315 persons, injured 5300 others, and
caused 600 million dollars damage. Alabama, Kentucky and
Ohio were especially hard hit in the tornado outbreak.
One tornado destroyed half of the town of Xenia OH killing
34 persons. Another tornado, near the town of Stamping
Ground KY, produced a path of destruction a record 5 miles
in width. A tornado raced through Guin AL at a speed of 75
mph. Two powerful tornadoes roared across northern Alabama
during the early evening hours, killing fifty persons and
injuring 500 others. Some rescue vehicles responding to
the first tornado were struck by the second.
In 1987 A storm in the southeastern U.S. produced a trace of snow at
Mobile AL, one inch at Jackson MS, and two inches at
Meridian MS, the latest snow of record for those three
locations. Birmingham AL received seven inches of snow, and
up to nine inches was reported in northeast Alabama.
In 1988 A wind gust to 114 mph was clocked at Ann Arbor MI during
a tornadic thunderstorm. Thunderstorms in Michigan and
Indiana spawned five tornadoes that Easter Sunday, and also
produced golf ball size hail.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from the Southern
Plains to the southern and central Appalachians. The
thunderstorms spawned twenty tornadoes, including one which
caused eight million dollars damage at Fort Branch IN.
In 1990 Rain and snow prevailed in the northeastern U.S., with snow
reported in New York State. Boston MA was soaked with 2.91
inches of rain during the day and night, and up to half a
foot of snow blanketed the hills of Steuben County NY that
Tuesday night.
In 2012 Severe thunderstorms with reports of at leats 18 tornadoes,
along with baseball and larger sized hail, blasted the
Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Tractor trailer rigs were
tossed almost 200 feet in the air by the tornadoes. While
there were numerous injuries and widespread damage, no one
died in the outbreak, with one EF3 tornado, and the rest
being from EF0 to EF2 tornadoes. Dallas suburbs of
Kennedale, Arlington, Lancaster, and Forney, among other
areas, were hit by the tornadoes.

In 1804 A large tornado crossed six Georgia counties killing at
least eleven persons near Augusta.
In 1933 Pigeon River Bridge MN reported 28 inches of snow, which
established the state 24 hour snowfall record. (4th-5th)
In 1973 Sandia Crest NM reported a snow depth of 95 inches, a record
for the state of New Mexico.
In 1983 Colorado was in the midst of a three day winter storm.
Buckhorn Mountain, located west of Fort Collins, received
64 inches of snow.
In 1987 Rains of five to eight inches drenched eastern New York
State, and ten persons were killed in a bridge collapse
over Schoharie Creek.
In 1988 Sunny and warm weather prevailed across the nation.
Fort Smith AR reported a record high of 90 degrees.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from the Lower
Mississippi Valley to the Southern Appalachians. The
thunderstorms spawned seventeen tornadoes, including one
which caused two million dollars damage at Baldwin AL.
Thunderstorm winds gusted to 90 mph at Bremen GA.
In 1990 A deep low pressure system in northern New York State
brought heavy snow to parts of western and central New York
during the day. The snowfall total of 5.8 inches at Buffalo
was a record for the date, and 9.5 inches was reported at
Rochester. Snowfall totals ranged up to 11 inches at Warsaw.
In 2004 (3rd-4th) Severe thunderstorms with heavy rain pounded
New Mexico and west and southwest Texas. On the 4th,
rainfall rates over parts of south Texas reached 2-4
inches per hour. In Toyah, TX...40 of the 100 residents
had to be evacuated, when the Arroyos and Raines that
carve up the land, filled all at once, breaking an
earthen dam, and sending a 3 foot wall of water through
the town. Water still 18 inches deep covered the streets
late in the day.
In 2011 Severe weather affected much of Arkansas, primarily south
of a Mena to Jonesboro line. Damaging winds was the main
severe weather occurrence, but there was a tornado near
Texarkana.

In 1936 A tornado hit Tupelo, MS...killing 216, and injuring 700.
In 1945 The temperature at Eagles Nest NM plunged to 45 degrees
below zero to establish a United States April record.
In 1955 The Northern Rockies and the Northern High Plains were in
the midst of a four day storm which produced 52 inches of
snow at Lead, located in the Black Hills of western
South Dakota.
In 1972 A tornado, 500 yards wide at times, touched down at a marina
on the Oregon side of the Columbia River, and then tore
through Vancouver WA killing 6 persons, injuring 300 others,
and causing more than five million dollars damage. It was
the deadliest tornado of the year, and the worst of record
for Washington.
In 1982 An unprecedented April blizzard began in the northeastern
U.S. One to two feet of snow fell across Massachusetts and
Connecticut, and up to 26 inches was reported in Maine.
New York City received a foot of snow. Winds reached 70
to 80 mph during the storm, and the storm also produced
numerous thunderstorms, which contributed to the heavy snow.
In 1987 A storm produced unprecedented April snows in the central
Appalachians. Mount Mitchell NC received 35 inches of snow,
and up to 5 feet of snow was reported in the mountains along
the border of North Carolina and Tennessee. The total of 25
inches at Charleston WV easily surpassed their previous
record for the entire month of April of 5.9 inches. The 20.6
inch total at Akron OH established an all-time record for
that location. Near record flooding contributed to the
collapse of a New York State bridge spanning Schoharie Creek
near Amsterdam, causing 10 deaths.
In 1988 Thirty-nine cities across the eastern half of the country
reported record high temperatures for the date, including
Saint Louis MO with a reading of 91 degrees. Laredo TX was
the hot spot in the nation with an afternoon high of 100
degrees.
In 1989 Unseasonably hot weather prevailed in the southwestern U.S.
Afternoon highs of 100 degrees at Santa Maria CA and 105
degrees in Downtown Los Angeles established records for the
month of April.
In 1990 Afternoon and evening thunderstorms developing along a cold
front produced severe weather in southern Oklahoma, southern
Arkansas, and north central and northeastern Texas.
Thunderstorms spawned a dozen tornadoes in Texas, including
one at Fort Worth which caused a million dollars damage.
There were nearly one hundred reports of large hail and
damaging winds. Thunderstorms in Texas produced hail three
nd a half inches in diameter west of Fort Worth, and
produced wind gusts to 80 mph at Cross Plains.

In 1936 A tornado outbreak in the Deep South resulted in a total of
446 deaths and eighteen million dollars damage. It was a
"Tale of Two Cities". During the evening of the 5th, a
tornado hit Tupelo MS killing 216 persons, injuring 700
others, and causing three million dollars damage. The next
morning the paths of two tornadoes met about 8:30 AM and cut
a swath four blocks wide through Gainesville GA killing 203
persons, injuring 934, and causing thirteen million dollars
damage. Eight to ten feet of debris filled the streets
following the storm. At least 70 persons died in the Cooper
Pants Factory, the greatest tornado toll of record for a
single building.
In 1982 12 inches of snow, with 3 foot drifts at Yankee Stadium in
New York City postponed the season opener between the
New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers.
In 1983 The temperature at Denver CO dipped to a record cold seven
degrees above zero.
In 1987 Rain and melting snow caused flooding from New England to
Ohio. Flooding in the Merrimack Valley of Massacusetts was
the worst in fifty years, causing forty-two million dollars
damage.
In 1988 A powerful storm produced wind gusts to 75 mph around Chicago
IL, and wind gusts to 92 mph at Goshen IN. The high winds
created twenty-five foot waves on Lake Michigan.
In 1989 Unseasonably hot weather prevailed in California. Afternoon
highs of 91 degrees in Downtown San Francisco, 93 degrees at
San Jose, 98 degrees at San Diego, 103 degrees at Santa
Maria, 104 degrees at Riverside, and 106 degrees in Downtown
Los Angeles established records for the month of April.
In 1990 Snow developed in the northeastern U.S. for the second time
in the month. In Virginia, a heavy wet snow blanketed
northern and central sections of the Shenandoah Valley, and
eastern foothills, with up to 12 inches reported around
Harrisonburg. Heavy snow also blanketed the high elevations
of West Virginia, with 10 inches reported at Snowshoe.
An inch of snow at Syracuse NY raised their total for the
winter season to a record-tying 161.3 inches.
In 2003 While the southern plains and the Gulf Coast were bearing the
brunt of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, a snowstorm left
a 1000 mile path of snow from the Plains to the East Coast.
More than a foot of wet snow fell across parts of Nebraska
and southern Minnesota, with 4 inches of snow falling in
Central Park in New York City. (6th-7th).

In 1857 A late season freeze brought snow to every state in the
Union. Even as far south as Houston TX the mercury plunged
to 21 degrees.
In 1929 Record heat prevailed across New England. Hartford CT
reported an afternoon high of 90 degrees.
In 1935 Amarillo TX reported dust obscuring visibility for 20 hours.
Blowing dust was reported twenty-seven of 30 days in the
month. On several days the visibility was reduced to near
zero by the dust.
In 1980 Severe thunderstorms spawned tornadoes which ripped through
central Arkansas. The severe thunderstorms also produced
high winds and baseball size hail. Five counties were
declared disaster areas by President Carter.
In 1984 In Texas, members of a soccer team were on an aluminum
ladder, putting up a net, when lightning struck, ripping
the clothes off a player.
In 1987 International Falls MN, with record warm afternoon high of
71 degrees, was warmer than Miami FL, where the high was a
record cool 66 degrees.
In 1988 High winds in the Middle Atlantic Coast Region gusted to
172 mph atop Grandfather Mountain NC. Twenty-nine cities
in the southwest and north central U.S. reported record
high temperatures for the date, including Yankton SD with
a reading of 91 degrees.
In 1989 Twenty-seven cities in the southwestern U.S. reported record
high temperatures for the date. Afternoon highs of 92
degrees in Downtown San Francisco and 104 degrees at Phoenix
AZ established records for April. Highs of 78 degrees at
Ely NV and 93 degrees at San Jose CA equalled April records.
In 1990 Low pressure brought strong winds to the Alaska peninsula
and the Aleutian Islands. Winds gusted to 68 mph at Port
Heiden two days in a row. Unseasonably warm weather
prevailed across central Alaska. Yakutat reported a record
high of 54 degrees. Unseasonably cold weather prevailed over
central sections of the Lower Forty-eight states. A dozen
cities from Kansas to Indiana and Alabama reported record
low temperatures for the date. Evansville IN equalled their
record for April with a morning low of 23 degrees.
In 2001 Severe thunderstorms struck a large part of the central and
southern plains. Straight line winds struck Russell, Kansas
(113 mph), and Amarillo, Texas (80 mph)...where bricks were
ripped off of the front of a building.
In 2002 Severe weather and flooding rains plagued parts of Texas,
Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Mississippi. A large
tornado roared through Throckmorton County, Texas...while
over 6 inches of rain fell over portions of northwestern
Arkansas, aggravating already existing flooding conditions.
In 2004 A third day of heavy rain, with 2-4 inches across
south and southeast Texas aggravated ongoing flash
flooding. Thunderstorms from North Texas into Oklahoma
and Kansas dropped from 2-5 inches of rain.

In 1819 A tornado swarm in northern Texas resulted in 64 deaths.
In 1926 The lightning-set oil depot fire near San Luis Obispo CA
boiled over and engulfed 900 acres. Many tornado vortices
resulted from the intense heat of the fire. One such tornado
traveled 1000 yards, picked up a house and carried it 150
feet, killing the two occupants inside.
In 1973 A severe storm brought high winds and heavy snow to Iowa.
Belle Plain received 20 inches of snow, and 19 inches
blanketed Dubuque, record totals for both locations for
so late in the season. Snow drifts up to sixteen feet high
closed highways.
In 1979 Tornado outbreaks hit Arkansas on the 8th and 11th; with
Hamburg, in southeast Arkansas, being hit each time.
In 1984 (8th-14th) Intense tropical cyclone Kamisy crossed and
recrossed the north of Madagascar, leaving 100,000 homeless.
In 1987 A cold front crossing the Northern Plateau and the Northern
Rocky Mountain Region produced high winds in northeastern
Wyoming. Winds gusting to 69 mph at Sheridan WY downed power
lines and caused some property damage.
In 1988 Strong northerly winds ushered cold air into the north
central U.S. The strong winds, gusting to 60 mph at
Rapid City SD and Williston ND, reduced visibilities in
blowing dust over the Dakotas.
In 1989 Two dozen cities in the southwestern U.S. reported new
record high temperatures for the date. Phoenix AZ
equalled their record for April of 104 degrees established
just the previous day.
In 1990 Twenty-two cities reported record low temperatures for the
date as readings dipped into the 20s and 30s across much of
the eastern U.S. Freezing temperatures severely damaged
peach and apple orchards in West Virginia, where prolonged
mild weather since January had caused an early blooming of
spring vegetation. State and Federal agencies estimated a
50 percent loss in production for peaches and "Delicious Red
Apples".

In 1877 Oregon Inlet NC was widened three quarters of a mile by a
nor'easter.
In 1947 A tornado struck Woodward OK during the late evening killing
95 persons and causing six million dollars damage. The
tornado, one to two miles in width, and traveling at a speed
of 68 mph, killed a total of 167 persons along its 221 mile
path from Texas into Kansas, injured 980 others, and caused
nearly ten million dollars damage. A man looking out his
front door was swept by a tornado from his home near Higgins
TX and carried two hundred feet over trees. The bodies of
two people, thought to be together at Glazier TX, were found
three miles apart.
In 1977 A storm brought 15.5 inches of rain to Jolo WV in 30 hours.
In 1987 International Falls MN reported their sixth straight record
high for the date, with a reading of 77 degrees. A cold
front ushering sharply colder weather into the north central
U.S. produced wind gusts to 60 mph at Glasgow MT.
In 1988 Residents of Sioux City IA awoke to find two inches of snow
on the ground following a record high temperature of 88
degrees the previous afternoon.
In 1989 Eighteen cities in the southwestern U.S. reported new record
high temperatures for the date. The afternoon high of 80
degrees at Eureka CA established a record for the month of
April.
In 1990 Thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front produced
severe weather from the Central High Plains to Arkansas
and northern Texas. Severe thunderstorms spawned five
tornadoes, and there were seventy reports of large hail
and damaging winds. A tornado injured four persons at
Ardmore OK, and thunderstorms produced wind gusts to 70
mph at Kellyville OK, and hail three inches in diameter
at Halmstead KS.
In 1991 A squall line of severe thunderstorms, with gusts up to 110
mph, raced across West Virginia, leaving $16 million damage.
In 2003 Snow flurries fell in Little Rock for the first April snow
since April 19, 1983...which is the latest measurable snow
in Little Rock. The flurries melted as they hit the ground,
so no accumulation resulted...as has been the case with all
April snows in Little Rock.
In 2004 Typhoon Sudal moved between Yap and Ngulu in the
western Pacific Ocean, with 125 mph winds. Damaging
winds also occurred on the island of Ulithi. The
island of Yap was in the eyewall for a time, with]
sustained winds of 75-100 mph, with gusts to 120
mph. Sudal would become a Super Typhoon after moving
away from the islands.

In 1894 A heavy late season snow blanketed parts of the northeastern
U.S. Heavier snowfall totals included 31.5 inches at Salem
Corners PA, 30 inches at LeRoy NY, 26 inches at York PA,
14 inches at Waterbury CT, and 9 inches at Providence RI.
In 1929 A major outbreak of tornadoes occurred in northeast Arkansas;
with 49 fatalities. One of the tornadoes, which travelled
fron south of Batesville to north of Swifton to south of
Alicia was the only F-5 tornado on record for Arkansas.
In 1935 Severe dust storms across Iowa and Kansas closed schools
and highways. Dodge City KS experienced its worst dust
storm of record, with dense dust reported from the morning
of the 9th until after sunset on the 11th. The sky was
almost as dark as night at times during the daylight hours.
The thick dust suspended traffic on highways and railroads,
nd also suspended most business in town.
In 1965 Six people were killed in a tornado at Conway, Arkansas,
northwest of Little Rock. This was the beginning of a major
tornado outbreak the next day in the Great Lakes and Ohio
Valley.
In 1979 A massive (F-5) tornado hit Wichita Falls TX, killing 43
persons, and causing 300 million dollars damage. Another
tornado struck Vernon TX killing eleven persons. The day
became known as "Terrible Tuesday".
In 1983 A dust devil formed over a field in Alaska's Tanana Valley,
destroying a greenhouse, and blowing its debris 600 feet
away.
In 1987 Blustery northwest winds prevailed across the Northern Plains
Region. Winds in Wyoming gusted to 65 mph. Temperatures in
North Dakota were only in the 20s and 30s, following
afternoon highs in the 70s the previous day.
In 1988 Unseasonably warm weather prevailed in the western U.S.
Eleven cities reported new record high temperatures for the
date, including Bakersfield CA with a reading of 95 degrees,
their warmest for so early in the season. Pocatello ID
warmed from a record low of 19 above to an afternoon high of
63 degrees.
In 1989 Strong northerly winds, gusting to 53 mph at Albuquerque NM,
ushered cold arctic air into the south central U.S. The
temperature at Albuquerque plunged from 82 degrees to 29
degrees overnight. Thirty-three cities in the central U.S.
reported record low temperatures for the date, including
Goodland KS with a reading of 4 degrees above zero.
In 1990 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from the Central Gulf
Coast Region to western sections of the Carolinas during the
afternoon and evening. Evening thunderstorms over western
South Carolina produced wind gusts to 98 mph which injured
four persons at Holly Springs, and wind gusts to 100 mph
which injured one person and caused half a million dollars
damage north of Dacusville.
In 2013 At least 24 homes in Hazelwood, Missouri, sustained severe
damage from severe storms, which pummeled the St. Louis
area and elsewhere across the state. Another tornado
touched down in Arkansas, damaging at least 33 homes, and
leaving three people injured in Van Buren County, about 75
miles north of Little Rock. The tornado demolished the
sanctuary, fellowship area, classrooms, and a pavilion at
Botkinburg Foursquare Church. Damage also was reported in
several other areas, and storm spotters reported overturned
vehicles along U.S. 65, north of Clinton. Flash Flooding
occurred around Montain View, near the Missouri border, and
downburst winds from 60 to 70 mph were reported in some
areas. Lightning sparked fires caused house fires near
Searcy and Pangburn. The next day, a violent and extremely
dangerous tornado was spotted near Macon, Mississippi, in
Nouxubee County. The storms continued to the east coast on
the 12th. Tragically, several injuries and some fatalities
were blamed on the squall line of severe thunderstorms
(10th-12th).

In 1965 Severe thunderstorms in the Upper Midwest spawned fifty-one
tornadoes killing 256 persons and causing more than 200
million dollars damage. Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan were
hardest hit in the "Palm Sunday Tornado Outbreak".
In 1987 Ten days of flooding in the northeastern U.S. finally came
to an end. Damage from flooding due to rain and snow melt
ran into the billions of dollars. The collapse of the New
York State Thruway Bridge over Schoharie Creek claimed ten
lives.
In 1988 Sixteen cities in the western U.S., nine in California,
reported new record high temperatures for the date.
Afternoon highs of 95 degrees at Sacramento CA and 96 degrees
at Bakersfield CA were the warmest of record for so early in
the season.
In 1989 Forty-four cities in the south central and eastern U.S.
reported new record low temperatures for the date. Lows of
25 degrees at Conway AR, 29 degrees at Dallas/Fort Worth TX,
and 22 degrees at Ozark AR, were April records. Lows of 26
degrees at Hot Springs AR and 31 degrees at Shreveport LA
equalled April records.
In 1990 While showers produced heavy rain over much of the
northeastern U.S., heavy snow blanketed northern Maine,
with 13 inches reported at Telos Lake. Strong southwesterly
winds accompanying the rain and snow gusted to 68 mph at the
Blue Hill Observatory in Massachusetts. Rainfall totals of
1.04 inch at Pittsburgh PA and 1.52 inches at Buffalo NY on
the 10th were records for the date.
In 2020 (11th-13th) Easter Weekend 2020 was a violent weather period
across much of the continental United States. Over 3,000
storm reports were received by the Storm Prediction Center.
They ranged from snow across the northern US...severe
weather (very large hail, hurricane force winds, violent
tornadoes and flooding rain) across the Southern Plains
into the southeastern US...and high winds (not from storms)
across areas not affected by snow or severe weather. Parts
of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, which were blasted
by large tornadoes not 2 weeks earlier, were hit yet again
by more severe storms.

In 1927 A tornado wiped out the town of Rock Springs TX killing
72 persons and causing 1.2 million dollars damage. The
tornado, more than one mile in width, destroyed 235 of
247 buildings, leaving no trace of lumber or contents
in many cases. Many survivors were bruised by large hail
which fell after the passage of the tornado.
In 1934 Winds atop Mount Washington NH averaged 186 mph for five
minutes, with a peak gust of 231 mph, the highest wind speed
ever clocked in the world. The actual gust may have been
higher, but the anemometer broke at 231 mph.
In 1945 On the day President Franklin Delano Roosevelt died,
tornadoes raked northwest Arkansas with 25 fatalities. This
was part of a major outbreak from Oklahoma into Missouri.
In 1987 A cold front crossing the central U.S. produced heavy snow
in the Central Rockies, and severe thunderstorms over Kansas
and Oklahoma. Snowfall totals ranged up to 16 inches at
Red Mountain Pass CO. Thunderstorm winds gusted to 87 mph
at Ponca City OK. Winds associated with the cold front
itself gusted to 69 mph at Tucumcari NM. A weak tornado
touched down at Bosque Farms, NM,bending a basketball
backboard on a metal pipe, so the top was 5 feet from the
ground.
In 1988 Snow blanketed the Southern Appalachians. Totals in North
Carolina ranged up to 17 inches at Mitchell. Winds at Flat
Top Mountain gusted to 80 mph.
In 1989 Twenty-two cities in the south central and eastern U.S.
reported record low temperatures for the date, including
Elkins WV with a low of 15 degrees, and Baton Rouge LA
with a reading of 37 degrees.
In 1990 Arctic air invaded the central U.S. Lincoln NE reported
a record low of 17 degrees. Thunderstorms developing along
the arctic cold front produced heavy snow in north central
Kansas, wind gusts to 61 mph at Midland TX, and wind gusts
to 69 mph at Rawlins WY. Warm weather prevailed in the
southwestern U.S. Las Vegas NV reported a record high of
91 degrees, and on the 13th, Sacramento CA reported a record
high of 95 degrees.

In 1877 The second coastal storm in just three days hit Virginia
and the Carolinas. The first storm flattened the sand dunes
at Hatteras, and widened the Oregon inlet three quarters of
a mile. The second storm produced hurricane force winds along
the coast of North Carolina causing more beach erosion and
land transformation.
In 1955 The town of Axis AL was deluged with 20.33 inches of rain in
24 hours establishing a state record.
In 1986 A major spring storm quickly intensified bringing blizzard
conditions to much of the Northern Plains Region. Up to 18
inches of snow was reported in North Dakota, and in South
Dakota, winds gusting to 90 mph whipped the snow into drifts
fifteen feet high. Livestock losses were in the millions of
dollars, and for some areas it was the worst blizzard ever.
In 1987 Thunderstorms in northern Texas produced wind gusts to 98
mph at the Killeen Airport, causing a million dollars in
property damage. Two airplanes were totally destroyed by the
high winds, and ten others were damaged.
In 1988 Low pressure off the Atlantic coast produced high winds
across North Carolina, with gusts to 78 mph reported at
Waves. The high winds combined with high tides to cause
coastal flooding and erosion. About 275 feet of land was
eroded from the northern tip of Pea Island.
In 1989 Thunderstorms in central Florida produced golf ball size
hail and a tornado near Lakeland FL. Fair and mild weather
prevailed across most of the rest of the nation.
In 1990 Thunderstorms developing along a cold front produced severe
weather in central Oklahoma and north central Texas.
Thunderstorms in Oklahoma produced up to six inches of golf
ball size hail along I-40 near El Reno, and produced wind
gusts to 75 mph at Okarche. Thunderstorms over north central
Texas produced softball size hail northwest of Rotan, and
high winds which injured two persons southeast of Itasca.
In 1991 (9th-13th) A 3 mile long ice jam on Maine's St. John River
broke up, releasing a 30 foot wall of ice, crushing cars,
and houses.

In 1886 A devastating tornado, 800 yards in width at times, cut a
20 mile path through Saint Cloud MN killing 74 persons.
The bottom of the Mississippi River was said to have been
seen during the tornado's crossing. Eleven persons were
killed at a wedding party near the town of Rice.
In 1973 A famous Easter blizzard raged across Kansas, Nebraska and
South Dakota. Gale force winds blew the wet snow into
massive drifts, however there were few deaths due to the
sparse population and due to the gradual increase of the
storm.
In 1987 A storm system moving slowly northeastward across the Middle
Mississippi Valley produced severe thunderstorms which
spawned three tornadoes around Ottumwa IA, and produced up
to four inches of rain in southeastern Nebraska, flooding
rivers and streams.
In 1988 A weather disturbance off the southern coast of California
brought parts of southern California their first rain in six
weeks. Rain-slickened roads resulted in numerous accidents
in southern California, including a ten car pile-up at
Riverside.
In 1989 Late afternoon thunderstorms in northern Florida soaked the
own of Golden Gate with 4.37 inches of rain in about 2 hours,
resulting in local flooding.
In 1990 Thunderstorms developing along a cold front produced
severe weather in southeastern Texas during the mid morning
hours. Thunderstorms produced dime size hail at Galveston,
and wind gusts to 59 mph at Port Arthur. Afternoon
thunderstorms over southeast Louisiana spawned tornadoes
south of Bogalusa and at Rio.
In 2011 (14th-15th) Severe thunderstorms with tornadoes, large
hail, and damaging winds rolled across Arkansas. Golfball
size hail occurred in some areas, with 10 tornadoes
across Arkansas...including an EF1 in west Little Rock.
In 2012 A tornado outbreak from Oklahoma, through Kansas, Nebraska,
and Iowa, had over 250 reports of severe weather, with over
120 tornadoes. Several died in Woodward, Oklahoma...and
there were several large and violent tornadoes spawned,
leaving behind widespread damage, and many others were
were injured. An EF tornado hit Wichita, Kansas...and an
tornado hit Thurman, Iowa.

In 1921 Two mile high Silver Lake CO received 76 inches of snow in
24 hours, the heaviest 24 hour total of record for North
America. The storm left a total of 87 inches in 27 1/2 hours.
A tornado outbreak that started in Texas swept into central
Arkansas...with 35 fatalities in Arkansas.
In 1927 New Orleans LA was drenched with 14.01 inches of rain,
which established a 24 hour rainfall record for the state.
In 1949 A hailstone five inches by five and a half inches in size,
and weighing four pounds, was measured at Troy NY.
In 1958 A tornado 300 yards in width skipped along a five mile path
near Frostproof FL. A 2500 gallon water tank was found one
mile from its original position (it is not known how much
water was in the tank at the time).
In 1987 Thunderstorms developing along a cold front produced severe
weather in the Southern Atlantic Coast Region. A tornado
killed one person and injured seven others near Mount Dora
FL. Drifts of hail up to two feet deep were reported in
Davidson and Rowan counties in North Carolina. Myrtle Beach
SC was deluged with seven inches of rain in three hours.
In 1988 Death Valley CA was soaked with 1.53 inches of rain in
24 hours. Snow fell in the mountains of southern California.
In 1989 Showers and thunderstorms soaked the eastern U.S. with heavy
rain, pushing the rainfall total for the month at Cape
Hatteras NC past their previous April record of 7.10 inches.
In 1990 Thunderstorms developing along a stationary front produced
severe weather from west central Texas to west central
Arkansas during the late afternoon and evening. Thunderstorms
spawned a tornado which caused more than half a million
dollars damage at Fort Stockton TX, produced wind gusts to
65 mph at Dennison TX, produced baseball size hail at
Silo OK and near Capps Corner TX, and drenched southeastern
Oklahoma with up to 4 inches of rain in two hours.

In 1851 The famous "Lighthouse Storm" raged near Boston Harbor.
Whole gales and gigantic waves destroyed Minot Light
with its two keepers still inside. The storm resulted
in great shipping losses and coastal erosion.
In 1880 A tornado near Marshall MO carried the heavy timbers of an
entire home a distance of twelve miles.
In 1933 Franklin Lake NH was buried under 35 inches of snow.
In 1960 A wind gust of 70 mph was measured at the Stapleton
International Airport in Denver CO, their highest wind
gust of record.
In 1987 A slow moving storm system produced heavy rain over North
Carolina and the Middle Atlantic Coast States. More than six
inches of rain drenched parts of Virginia, and flooding in
Virginia claimed three lives. Floodwaters along the James
River inundated parts of Richmond VA.
In 1988 A storm in the northeastern U.S. produced a foot of snow at
Pittsburg VT. Severe thunderstorms produced baseball size
hail and spawned five tornadoes in the Southern High Plains
Region.
In 1989 A cold front, ushering sharply colder air into the north
central U.S., brought snow to parts of Montana and North
Dakota. At midday the temperature at Cutbank MT was just
22 degrees.
In 1990 Thunderstorms developing along a stationary front produced
large hail and damaging winds across Oklahoma, with 99
reports of large hail and damaging winds during the evening
and early nighttime hours. Thunderstorms produced baseball
size hail south of Carney, and wind gusts to 100 mph in the
Oklahoma City area which swept away many Federal tax returns
being transported from a mail cart to a waiting truck about
the time of the midnight deadline. Will Rogers Airport in
Oklahoma City reported a record wind gust of 92 mph.
In 2002 Several tornadoes struck the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex
area, with quite a bit of damage.

In 1880 More than two dozen tornadoes were reported from Kansas and
Arkansas to Wisconsin and Michigan. More than 100 persons
were killed, including 65 persons at Marshfield MO.
In 1906 A severe earthquake shook San Francisco, and unusual
easterly winds spread fires destroying the city.
In 1944 California experienced its worst hailstorm of record. Damage
mounted to two million dollars as two consecutive storms
devastated the Sacramento Valley destroying the fruit crop.
In 1957 A dust devil near Dracut MA lifted a small child three
feet into the air, and rolled two other children on the
ground. Fortunately, none of the three were hurt. The dust
devil was accompanied by a loud whistling sound, as it moved
westward.
In 1970 Rapid City SD received a record 22 inches of snow in 24
hours. (17th-18th)
In 1987 Thirty-one cities in the central U.S. reported record high
temperatures for the date, including International Falls MN
with a reading of 88 degrees, and Bismarck ND with a high of
92 degrees. A sharp cold front produced high winds in the
western U.S. Winds in Utah gusted to 99 mph at the Park
City Angle Station, and capsized a boat on Utah Lake,
drowning four persons.
In 1988 Afternoon and evening thunderstorms produced large hail and
damaging winds in the southeastern U.S. A strong (F-2)
tornado severely damaged seventeen mobile homes near
Bainbridge GA, injuring three persons.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced large hail and damaging winds in
Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. A thunderstorm in Pecos County
of southwest Texas produced wind gusts to 90 mph at Imperial.
In 1990 Heavy snow blanketed the west central valleys and southwest
mountains of Colorado with up to 18 inches of snow. Nine
cities from the Mid Mississippi Valley to the Middle Atlantic
Coast Region reported record low temperatures for the date,
including Fort Wayne, IN with a reading of 23 degrees.

In 1775 The first engagement of the Revolutionary War took place
under clear crisp weather at Lexington-Concord.
In 1927 Southeast of Carrolton, Illinois, a teacher told her students
to take cover during a tornado. She didn't, and was killed,
while all the students survived the tornado.
In 1941 The temperature at Sodus NY soared to 95 degrees. The next
day Albany NY reported a record for April of 93 degrees.
In 1973 Glenrock WY received 41 inches of snow in just 24 hours,
and a storm total of 58 inches, to establish 2 state
records. (18th-20th)
In 1976 The northeastern U.S. was in the midst of an early season
heat wave, and the Boston Marathon took place in 90 degree
heat. At Providence RI the mercury hit 98 degrees.
In 1983 Little Rock, Arkansas would receive its latest snowfall on
record on this day...but with all other April snows in
Little Rock, no accumulation resulted.
In 1987 Forty cities in the central U.S. reported new record high
temperatures for the date as readings soared into the 80s
and lower 90s for Easter Sunday. Fort Smith AR reported
a record high of 95 degrees.
In 1988 Severe thunderstorms over the southeastern U.S. early in the
day spawned a strong (F-3) tornado which destroyed seventeen
homes, and severely damaged thirty houses near Madison FL;
killing four persons, and injuring eighteen others.
In 1989 A dozen cities in the southwestern U.S. reported new record
high temperatures for the date. The afternoon high of 98
degrees at Hanksville UT equalled their record for April.
Tucson AZ reported their earliest 100 degree reading of
record.
In 1990 Five cities in the northeastern U.S. reported record low
temperatures for the date as readings dipped into the 20s
and upper teens. Elkins WV reported a record low of 20
degrees. Thunderstorms over the Southern Plains produced
golf ball size hail at San Angelo TX, and up to four inches
of rain in southwestern Oklahoma.

In 1901 A spring storm produced unusally heavy snow in northeast
Ohio. Warren received 35.5 inches in thirty-six hours,
and 28 inches fell at Green Hill. Akron OH established
April records of 15.6 inches in 24 hours, and 26.6 inches
for the month. Pittsburgh PA established April records
of 12.7 inches in 24 hours, and 13.5 inches for the month.
In 1920 Tornadoes in Mississippi and Alabama killed 219 persons.
In 1952 The tankers Esso Suez and Esso Greensboro crashed in a thick
fog off the coast of Morgan City LA. Only five of the
Greensboro's crew survived after the ship bursts into flame.
In 1973 (18th-20th) The springtime 58 inch snowfall near Glenrock,
Wyoming, set the state's single storm snowfall record.
In 1987 Fifty-two cities in the central and eastern U.S. reported
new record high temperatures for the date. The high of 92
degrees at Memphis Tn was a record for April, and the high
of 94 at Little Rock AR equalled their April record.
In 1988 A storm in the western U.S. brought heavy rain to parts of
California. Mount Wilson was soaked with 4.15 inches of
rain in 24 hours. The heavy rain caused some flooding and
mudslides in the Los Angeles area, and a chain reaction
collision of vehicles along the Pomona Freeway, which
resulted in 26 injuries.
In 1989 Hot weather spread from the southwestern U.S. into the
Great Plains Region. Twenty-three cities reported new
record high temperatures for the date. The afternoon high
of 104 degrees at Tucson AZ was an April record, and highs
of 87 at Provo UT, 90 at Pueblo CO, and 85 at Salt Lake City
UT, equalled April records.
In 1990 A fast moving Pacific storm produced heavy snow in the
central mountains and the Upper Arkansas Valley of Colorado,
with a foot of snow reported at Leadville. Thunderstorms in
the south central U.S. produced wind gusts to 76 mph at
Tulsa OK, and heavy rain which caused flooding of Cat Claw
Creek in the Abilene TX area. Lightning struck the building
housing a fish farm in Scott AR, killing 10,000 pounds of
fish. Many of the fish died from the heat of the fire.
In 2004 (20th-24th) Widespread severe thunderstorms, heavy
rain, flash flooding, and tornadoes affected a large
area. On the 20th, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Indiana, and
Illinois were hit by several tornadoes. Utica, IL
was hardest hit with several fatalities and heavy
damage. In Kokomo, IN...a tornado took the roof off
of a skating rink...but thanks to advance warning,
no one was hurt. Joilet, IL also had storm damage.
From the 21st through the 24th, Arkansas received
heavy rain and significant flooding. In Conway, AR,
a 17 year old boy was killed by lightning as he
waited on the school bus. Storm totals for the
period were well over 6 inches in many areas.

In 1958 Portions of Montana were in the midst of a spring snowburst.
Snowfall amounts ranged up to 55 inches at Red Lodge, 61
inches at Nye Mine, and 72 inches at Mystic Lake.
In 1967 Severe thunderstorms spawned 48 tornadoes in the Upper
Midwest. Hardest hit was northern Illinois where sixteen
tornadoes touched down during the afternoon and evening
hours, causing fifty million dollars damage. On that
Friday afternoon, tornadoes struck Belvidere IL, and the
Chicago suburb of Oak Lawn, killing 57 persons.
In 1980 The temperature at International Falls MN hit 90 degrees.
In 1987 Unseasonably warm weather prevailed from the Gulf of Mexico
to New England and the Great Lakes Region, with twenty-nine
cities reporting record high temperatures for the date.
Afternoon highs of 82 degrees at Caribou ME, 94 degrees at
Mobile AL, 95 degrees at Monroe LA, and 93 degrees at
New Orleans LA, were records for the month of April.
In 1988 After having had just twelve rainouts in the previous 26
years at Dodger Stadium, a third day of heavy rain in
southern California rained out a double-header at Dodger
Stadium, which had been scheduled due to rainouts the
previous two days.
In 1989 The temperature at Las Animas CO soared to 100 degrees to
establish a state record for April. Twenty-two cities in the
central and southwestern U.S. reported record high
temperatures for the date. Eight cities equalled or
exceeded previous April records.
In 1990 Afternoon and evening thunderstorms produced golf ball size
hail in Oklahoma, and also caused some flash flooding in the
state. Thunderstorms over the Southern High Plains produced
golf ball size hail at Roswell NM and El Paso TX. Easterly
winds and temperatures near zero produced wind chill
readings as cold as 50 degrees below zero for the spring
festival (Piuraagiaqta) outdoor events at Barrow AK.
The Warrego River in Queensland, Australia rose 3 feet over
its flood stage, forcing all 3500 residents to be evacuated.
In 1996 A tornado hit downtown Fort Smith in western Arkansas,
then continued into Van Buren, across the Arkansas River.
Another tornado hit St. Paul in northwest Arkansas about
about an hour later. There were 4 fatalities in all.
In 2001 An F-4 tornado struck Hoisington, Kansas...killing one, and
injuring several others.
In 2002 The latest occurrence of the first tornado fatality in a
calendar year in the United States occurred in Wayne County,
Illinois. Many others were injured, with many structures
damaged or destroyed.
In 2003 Subtropical storm Ana formed over the Atlantic Ocean, but
was only a threat to shipping. Ana acquired tropical
characteristics a few days later, but shortly thereafter
became extratropical...never reaching hurricane status.

In 1883 An outbreak of tornadoes from Louisiana to Kansas claimed
200 lives. One of the tornadoes destroyed the town of
Beauregard MS.
In 1910 (22nd-26th) The 6.4 inch snow, which fell on Chicago, began
the latest significant snow event for Chicago in April.
In 1980 A record April heat wave sent the mercury up to the 100
degree mark in Iowa.
In 1987 Fifteen cities in the southeastern U.S. reported new record
high temperatures for the date. The afternoon high of 96
degrees at Pensacola Fl established a record for the month
of April.
In 1988 Heavy snow fell over northern Nebraska, with 15 inches
reported at Mullen. Heavy snow also blanketed the mountains
of northern Arizona, with 16 inches reported at Munds Park.
In 1989 Twenty-seven cities in the central U.S. reported record high
temperatures for the date. The high of 96 degrees at Omaha
was an April record, and the high of 100 degrees at Lubbock
TX equalled their record for April. Hill City KS and Liberal
KS tied for honors as the hot spot in the nation with
afternoon highs of 103 degrees.
In 1990 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from the Southern and
Central High Plains to northwest Florida during the afternoon
and evening. Thunderstorms produced wind gusts to 67 mph at
Gillette WY, hail two inches in diameter west of Roswell NM,
and deluged Cheyenne OK with 8.68 inches of rain, leaving
some parts of the town under five feet of water. Temperatures
reached the low 90s in the north central U.S. Chamberlain SD
and Pickstown SD tied Presidio TX for honors as the hot spot
in the nation with afternoon highs of 94 degrees.

In 1885 The city of Denver CO was in the midst of a storm which
produced 23 inches of snow in 24 hours, and at Idaho Springs
CO produced 32 inches of snow.
In 1910 The temperature at the Civic Center in Los Angeles CA hit
100 degrees to establish an April record for the city.
In 1983 A mini-blizzard produced sixteen inches of snow at Laramie
WY, including a foot of snow in just 8 hours during the
night.
In 1986 (22nd-23rd) An unusually late snowfall in Pennsylvania (up
to 30 inches in the Poconos) created traffic jams with 20
mile backups.
In 1987 Thunderstorms in the Atlantic Coast Region produced golf
ball size hail and wind gusts to 67 mph at Anderson SC.
The high winds destroyed two planes at the airport, and
the large hail damaged fifty other planes, and severely
damaged twenty-three greenhouses.
In 1988 An intense winter-like storm brought thunderstorms to
southern California, and produced snow in some of the higher
elevations. Nine girls at Tustin CA were injured when
lightning struck the tree under which their softball team
had taken shelter from the rain.
In 1989 Salina KS was the hot spot in the nation with a high of 105
degrees. The high of 105 degrees established an April record
for the state of Kansas. A total of eighteen cities in
the central U.S. reported record high temperatures for the
date.
In 1990 Thunderstorms produced severe weather in West Texas and
western Oklahoma. Thunderstorms produced tennis ball size
hail at Lake McKenzie TX, and at Garden City TX, and
produced wind gusts to 90 mph at Gage OK. Thunderstorms
drenched southeast Minnesota with heavy rain, with 6.6
inches reported northwest of Browndale. High temperatures
were mostly in the 80s across the central U.S. The morning
low of 67 degrees at Fargo ND and afternoon high of 91
degrees were both records for the date.
In 2004 (21st-23rd) Heavy rainfall, from 4 to 6 inches, with
isolated amounts, fell across much of Arkansas. Widespread
flash flooding resulted.
In 2012 An unexpected and massive snowstorm affected much of the
northeast United States, with over a foot of heavy wet snow
in some areas...bringing down many tree branches, that had
budded out with spring leaves, due to the mild winter that
had just ended.

CO. It was the lowest reading of record for the U.S.
during the month of May.
In 1898 A severe thunderstorm, with some hailstones up to 9.5
inches in circumference, pounded a four mile wide path
across Kansas City MO. South-facing windows were broken
in nearly every house in central and eastern parts of the
city, and several persons were injured.
In 1987 The temperature at Sacramento CA soared to 103 degrees to
establish a May record of seven days of 100 degree heat.
It also marked the ninth record high of the month.
Seven cities in the western U.S. reported record high
temperatures for the date as unseasonably hot weather
made a comeback. The record high of 103 degrees at
Sacramento CA marked a record seven days of 100 degree
heat in the month of May. The previous record was two
such days. It also marked their ninth record high in
eleven days.
In 1988 Sunny and dry weather prevailed across the nation.
Temperatures warmed into the 80s and lower 90s in the
Great Plains Region and the Mississippi Valley.
In 1989 Thunderstorms developing along a stationary front
produced severe weather in south central Texas and the
Southern High Plains Region during the afternoon and
evening hours. Thunderstorms produced softball size hail
at Spearman TX and Hitchcock TX.
In 1990 Thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front produced
severe from northwest Texas to western Missouri. The
thunderstorms spawned seventeen tornadoes, including nine
in Texas. Four tornadoes in Texas injured a total of
nine persons. Thunderstorms in Texas also produced hail
four inches in diameter at Shamrock, and hail four and a
half inches in diameter near Guthrie. Thunderstorms over
northeastern Kansas produced more than seven inches of
rain in Chautauqua County between 9 PM and midnight.

First day of the Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season.
In 1834 The Northern Atlantic Coast States were in the midst of
their greatest May snowstorm of record. The hills around
Newbury VT were covered with two to three feet of snow.
In 1968 A tornado touched down southwest of Anchorage AK ...the
only tornado of record in Alaska. On that same day,
Jonesboro in northeast Arkansas was hit by a tornado; 34
people were killed.
In 1972 The worst ice jam flooding of memory for long-time
residents took place along the Kuskokwim River and Yukon
River in Alaska. It was the first time since 1890 that
the two rivers "flowed as one". The towns of Oscarville
and Napaskiak were completely inundated. (15th-31st)
In 1987 Unseasonably warm weather returned to the north central
U.S. Seven cities reported record high temperatures for
the date, including Janestown ND with a reading of 96
degrees. Thunderstorms in Utah produced five inches of
rain south of Bicknell.
In 1988 Thunderstorms in Oklahoma produced wind gusts to 80 mph
in Oklahoma County, and baseball size hail at Pawnee.
Hail piled up to a dpth of 18 inches south of Pawnee.
Hail damage in Oklahoma was estimated at close to
25 million dollars. Thunderstorms in the Upper Midwest
produced golf ball size hail around Cleveland OH, and
wind gusts to 83 mph at Angola IN.
In 1989 Thunderstorms developing along and north of a stationary
front produced severe weather in the south central U.S.
Thunderstorms spawned 11 tornadoes, and there were 145
reports of large hail and damaging winds. Softball size
hail caused 2.1 million dollars damage at Sherman TX.
In 1990 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from the Central
Plains Region and Oklahoma to Indiana and western
Kentucky. Thunderstorms spawned fifteen tornadoes,
inclduing seven in Oklahoma, and there were 165 reports
of large hail or damaging winds. A tornado killed one
person, injured a dozen others and caused four million
dollars damage at Stillwater OK, and another injured
eight persons at Foyil OK. Thunderstorms in Oklahoma
also produced wind gusts to 92 mph at Oologah Lake,
and softball size hail at Canton and north of Oakwood.
In 2013 Severe weather blasted much of north and central Texas,
with numerous reports of tornadoes, winds over hurricane
force, and hail to the size of softballs. An EF-3 tornado
hit Cleburne, and an EF-4 tornado hit Granbury. At least
16 tornadoes hit the region, killing at least 6, injuring
over 100, and causing widespread damage.

In 1883 A three day flood in the Black Hills of western South
Dakota resulted in a million dollars damage at Rapid City.
In 1979 A reading of 12 degrees at Mauna Kea Observatory
established an all-time record low for the state of
Hawaii.
In 1983 A golfer playing the Fox Meadows Course in Memphis TN was
struck by a bolt of lightning that went through his neck,
down his spine, came out a pocket containing his keys,
and went into a nearby tree. Miraculously, he survived!
In 1987 A summer-like weather pattern continued, with warm
temperatures and scattered thunderstorms across much
of the nation. A cold front in the north central U.S.
produced a sharp contrast in the weather across the state
of Minnesota during the afternoon. At the same time
Duluth was 50 degrees with rain and fog, Mankato was 95
degrees with sunny skies.
In 1988 Thunderstorms produced large hail and damaging winds over
the Carolinas during the afternoon and evening.
A "thunderstorm of a lifetime" in northern Spartanburg
County SC produced hail for forty-five minutes, leaving
some places knee-deep in hail. .
In 1989 Thunderstorms ravaged the south central U.S. with severe
weather for the third day in a row. Thunderstorms
spawned another 19 tornadoes, for a total of fifty
tornadoes in three days. A strong (F-2) tornado injured
14 persons and caused two million dollars damage at Apple
Springs TX. Baseball size hail was reported at Matador, TX.
In 1990 Thunderstorms developing along a cold front produced
severe weather in New York State during the late morning
and afternoon. A tornado injured one person at Warren,
and wind gusts to 80 mph were reported at Owego. Evening
thunderstorms over southwest Texas produced wind gusts to
80 mph at Marfa, along with golf ball size hail which
accumulated to a depth of ten inches, and late night
thunderstorms in southwest Texas proudced up to seven
inches of rain in western Crockett County.
In 2014 The Balklands and Serbia experienced their worst flooding
in over 120 years. (16th-18th).

In 1825 A tornado (said to have crossed all of the state of Ohio)
smashed into the log cabin settlement of Burlington,
northeast of Columbus.
In 1960 Salt Lake City UT received an inch of snow. It marked
their latest measurable snowfall of record.
In 1980 Mount Saint Helens (in Washington State) erupted spewing
ash and smoke sixty-three thousand feet into the air.
Heavy ash covered the ground to the immediate northwest,
and small particles were carried to the Atlantic coast.
In 1987 Thunderstorms in Kansas, developing along a cold front,
spawned tornadoes at Emporia and Toledo, produced wind
gusts to 65 mph at Fort Scott, and produced golf ball
size hail in the Kansas City area. Unseasonably hot
weather prevailed ahead of the cold front. Pomona NJ
reported a record high of 93 degrees, and Altus OK hit
100 degrees.
In 1988 Low pressure anchored over eastern Virginia kept showers
and thunderstorms over the Middle Atlantic Coast Region.
Flash flooding was reported in Pennsylvania. Up to five
inches of rain drenched Franklin County PA in 24 hours.
In 1989 Thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front produced
severe weather from the Central Gulf Coast States to the
Lower Missouri Valley during the day and evening.
Thunderstorms spawned 16 tornadoes, and there were
74 reports of large hail and damaging winds.
In 1990 Thunderstorms produced severe weather in the central U.S.
spawning a total of sixteen tornadoes, including a dozen
in Nebraska. Thunderstorms also produced hail 4 inches
in diameter at Perryton TX, wind gusts to 84 mph at Ellis,
KS; and high winds which caused nearly two million
dollars damage at Sutherland NE. Thunderstorms deluged
Sioux City IA with up to eight inches of rain, resulting
in a record flood crest on Perry Creek and at least 4 1/2
million dollars damage.
In 2013 (18th-22nd) Widespread severe weather occurred across
the country...from Texas and Oklahoma north into the
Great Lakes region. Some of the tornadoes were strong to
violent, especially in Oklahoma and Kansas...plus, there
were reports of hail to as big as softballs, and damaging
winds to hurricane force. The storms moved into the
Mississippi Valley on the 21st, and worked toward the US
east coast. At least 26 tornadoes occurred across portions
of Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa, and Illinois on the 19th.
Tragically, widespread damage, injuries, and fatalities
resulted. Many areas hit in the May 3, 1999 F-5 tornado
were hit again on the 20th by an EF-5 tornado. At least 24
died, across Oklahoma on the 20th...10 of those were
children, at 1 of 2 elementary schools that took a direct
hit from the massive tornado.

In 1780 The infamous "dark day" in New England tradition.
At noon it was nearly as dark as night. Chickens went to
roost, and many persons were fearful of divine wrath.
The phenomenon was caused by forest fires to the west of
New England.
In 1955 Lake Maloya NM received 11.28 inches of rain in 24 hours
to establish a state record.
In 1975 Thunderstorms produced golf ball size hail and wind gusts
to 110 mph in Minnesota, between Fridley and Hugo. Fifty
persons were injured. The hail and high winds destroyed
fifty mobile homes, and a dozen aircraft, and also
destroyed a third of the Brighton Elementary School.
In 1978 Moorcroft, Wyoming received an incredible May snowfall
total of 92". 55" fell from the 3rd to the 9th.
In 1987 Thunderstorms in Texas produced thirteen inches of rain
northwest of Lavernia. The heavy rain, along with golf
ball size hail, destroyed eighty percent of the crops in
the area, while high winds toppled trees. Golf ball size
hail was also reported south of Dallas and around San
Antonio. Up to 8 inches of rain drenched Guadelupe
County.
In 1988 Severe thunderstorms in southwest Texas produced hail as
large as tennis balls around Midland, with the hail
accumulating up to a foot deep. Showers and thunder-
storms in the Middle Atlantic Coast Region produced
3.5 inches of rain near Schuylkill PA.
In 1989 Thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front spawned
ten tornadoes from Illinois to Tennessee during the
afternoon and night. Snow, wind and cold prevailed in
the Northern Plateau Region and the Northern Rockies.
Dixie ID was blanketed with nine inches of snow, winds
gusted to 87 mph at Choteau MT, and the temperature at
Crater Lake OR dipped to 11 degrees.
In 1990 Thunderstorms deluged Hot Springs AR with thirteen inches
of rain in nine hours resulting in a devastating flood.
Two waves of water, four to six feet deep, swept down
Central Avenue flooding stores and the famous bathhouses
on Bathhouse Row. Water released from Lake Hamilton
devastated the area between it and Remmel Dam. The 500
foot Carpenter Dam Bridge across Lake Catherine was
completely washed away, as were cabins and mobile homes
near the lake, many of which flowed right over the top of
Remmel Dam.
In 2012 Tropical Storm Alberto became the earliest forming
tropical storm in the Atlantic Basin since 2003. This
the first time that a tropical storm has formed before
the official start of the hurricane season in both the
Atlantic and East Pacific Basins (Aletta formed in the
Eastern Pacific basin on May 14, 2012).

In 1894 A record late snow of 2 to 8 inches whitened parts of
central and eastern Kentucky. Lexington received six
inches of snow.
In 1916 A tornado struck the town of Codell KS. Another tornado
struck the town the next year, and a third tornado hit
again the following year.
In 1957 A tornado touched down to the southwest of Kansas City
and traveled a distance of seventy-one miles cutting a
swath of near total destruction through the southeastern
suburbs of Ruskin Heights and Hickman Mills. The tornado
claimed the lives of forty-five persons, and left
hundreds homeless. It was the worst weather disaster of
record for Kansas City.
In 1987 Thunderstorms in southern Texas produced grapefruit size
hail, by Dilley, and produced wind gusts to 73 mph at
Lake Amistad. The large hail broke windows, killed small
animals, and damaged watermelon. Thunderstorms
developing along a warm front produced severe weather
from Indiana to the Dakotas. Thunderstorms produced
baseball size hail at Denver IA, and wind gusts to 80 mph
in southern Henry County IL.
In 1988 Thunderstorms in the south central U.S. produced wind
gusts to 70 mph at Omaha NE, and wind gusts to 80 mph at
Midland TX and Dallas TX. Temperatures in California
soared into the 90s and above 100 degrees. San Jose CA
reported a record high of 97 degrees.
In 1989 Pre-dawn thunderstorms produced large hail in eastern
Oklahoma and northwestern Arkansas. Later in the morning
thunderstorms in North Carolina produced dime size hail
at Hanging Dog. Thunderstorms also produced severe
weather from the Lower Mississippi Valley to the Central
Plains Region later that day and night, with baseball size
hail reported around Lawn TX, Novice TX, and Eola. TX.
In 1990 Thunderstorms produced severe weather across the
southeastern quarter of the nation through the day
and night. Severe thunderstorms spawned six tornadoes,
including one which injured two persons at Algoma MS and
another which injured nine persons at Rogersville MO.
There were 119 reports of large hail or damaging winds.
Thunderstorms produced baseball size hail at Houston MO
and damaging winds which killed one person at Toccoa GA.

In 1860 A swarm of tornadoes occurred in the Ohio Valley.
Tornadoes struck the cities of Louisville KY, Cincinnati
OH, Chillicothe OH and Marietta OH causing a million
dollars damage.
In 1895 The temperature at Norwalk OH dipped to 19 degrees to
establish a state record for the month of May.
In 1896 The temperature at Salton CA soared to 124 degrees to
establish a U.S. record for May.
In 1980 The temperature at Williston ND reached 102 degrees to
set a record for May. The next day the mercury hit
106 degrees.
In 1987 Severe thunderstorms, developing along a cold front
ushering sharply colder weather into the central U.S.,
produced 60 mph winds and golf ball size hail at Sedalia
MO, and drenched Hagerstown IN with six inches of rain in
one hour. Temperatures soared into the 90s ahead of the
cold front. Paducah KY hit 94 degrees for the second day
in a row. Light snow blanketed Montana, with three
inches reported at Butte.
In 1988 Severe thunderstorms swept across southern Louisiana
during the morning hours spawning six tornadoes, and
producing wind gusts to 88 mph at Jennings. Thunder-
storms also produced five inches of rain in two hours at
Lake Charles, causing local flooding.
In 1989 Thunderstorms moving southeastward across the Central
Plains Region into Oklahoma and Arkansas produced severe
weather through the day and night. Thunder-storms
spawned just four tornadoes, but there were 243 reports
of large hail and damaging winds. Baseball size hail was
reported at Augusta KS, and thunderstorm winds gusted to
98 mph at Johnson KS.
In 1990 Thunderstorms produced severe weather across the
southeastern U.S. for the second day in a row. Severe
thunderstorms spawned five tornadoes, including one which
injured a person at Richmond KY. There were eighty-seven
reports of large hail or damaging winds, with hail three
inches in diameter reported at Austin TX. Thunderstorms
produced up to five inches of rain in Macon County GA,
and heavy rains left nearly eight feet of water over
roads near Stepstone KY.
In 2001 Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes raged across the
southern plains, and Great Lakes Region. Among other
places, tornadoes struck Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Michigan
(20th-21st). One supercell formed near Russellville,
Arkansas, and remained tornadic until the Mississippi
River...dropping a tornado in an empty field at Antioch.
Denver CO experienced a wide range in both weather and
temperature...when morning temperatures in the 70s were
met by winds near hurricane force from a cold front, and
snow with afternoon temperatures in the 30s.
In 2014 Supercell thunderstorms spawned several tornadoes and
numerous instances of hail up to baseball size, in and
around the Denver CO area. One tornado came within a
a mile of the airport, and several airplanes had to be
taken out of service, due to hail damage. Huge drifts
of hail piled up on streets, and flooding from heavy
rainfall stranded several drivers. The next day, severe
storms affected parts of the mid-Atlantic region...
including portions of Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia,
Maryland, and New York...with large hail, damaging winds,
flooding rain, and isolated tornadoes.

In 1876 Denver CO was drenched with 6.53 inches of rain in
24 hours, an all-time record for that location.
In 1911 The temperature at Lewiston ME soared to 101 degrees. It
was the hottest temperature ever recorded in New England
during the month of May.
In 1986 A hailstorm in central China destroyed 35,000 homes &
7700 acres of crops, killed over 100 people and injured
9000.
In 1987 A powerful tornado virtually wiped the small southwest
Texas community of Saragosa off the map. The twister
destroyed eighty-five percent of the structures in the
town killing thirty persons and injuring 121 others in
the town of population 183. The tornado hurled trucks
and autos through adobe and wood-frame homes, with some
vehicles blown 500 feet.
In 1988 Thunderstorms produced severe weather over the Central
Gulf Coast States. Tennis ball size hail was reported at
Ripley MS. Showers and thunderstorms in southern
Missouri produced 3.20 inches of rain at Springfield
to easily surpass their rainfall record for the date.
In 1989 Unseasonably hot weather continued in southern Texas and
parts of the southwestern U.S. Seven cities reported
record high temperatures for the date, including El Paso
TX with a reading of 100 degrees. Presidio TX was the
hot spot in the nation with a high of 111 degrees.
In 1990 Late afternoon and evening thunderstorms developing ahead
of a cold front in the north central U.S. produced severe
weather from northwestern Kansas to central Minnesota and
southeastern North Dakota. There were twenty-nine
reports of damaging winds, or dime to golf ball size
hail. Strong thunderstorm winds gusted to 69 mph at
Alexandria MN. Showers and thunderstorms over eastern
North Carolina soaked Wilmington with 2.91 inches of
rain, which established a record for the date.
In 2011 Severe weather widespread from the Great Lakes and Ohio
Valley areas, southwest into Oklahoma and Texas. An EF5
tornado smashed its way through Joplin, Missouri, causing
widespread damage...including to one of two area hospitals,
a high school, and a local Wal-Mart. A total of 158 people
died, the largest number ever killed in one area by a
single tornado, and it was the 8th deadliest tornado in
U.S. history. Medical equipment from Saint Johns Regional
Medical Center, which was right in the path of the tornado,
was found 45 miles away, with X-Rays from the hospital
found 70 miles away. The violent winds pushed several
people out of the windows to the ground below. Over 20 semi
trucks and countless cars were overturned on Interstate 44.
The tornado was on the ground for more than 22 miles.
In 2012 With the development of Tropical Storm Bud in the Eastern
Eastern Pacific Basin, this is the earliest date on record
for the second tropical storm in that basin; surpassing
the previous earliest date of May 29.

In 1882 An unusual late season snow blanketed eastern Iowa, with
4 to 6 inches reported around Washington.
In 1953 The temperature at Hollis OK soared from a morning low of
70 degrees to an afternoon high of 110 degrees to
establish a state record for the month of May.
In 1972 The worst ice-jam flooding in 100 years caused the Yukon
and Kuskokwim Rivers in Alaska to "flow as one."
In 1987 It was a busy day for thunderstorms in the central U.S.
Thunderstorms produced wind gusts to 65 mph at Shreveport
LA, and golf ball size hail at Marfa TX. Hobart OK
received 3.55 inches of rain in the morning, and another
4.03 inches of rain that evening. Thunder-storms in
Nebraska produced 8.5 inches of rain in two hours north
of Potter, and 7.5 inches of rain in ninety minutes north
of Minatare. Thunderstorms in Colorado produced five
inches of hail at Greeley.
In 1988 Thunderstorms produced severe weather across much of the
eastern U.S. Golf ball size hail was reported in
Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina and
Ohio.
In 1989 Severe thunderstorms developing along a cold front
resulted in 98 reports of large hail and damaging winds
in the Northern Plains and Upper Mississippi Valley.
Golf ball size hail caused a million dollars damage
around Buffalo City WI, baseball size hail was reported
at Northfield MN and Randolph MN, and thunderstorm winds
gusted to 95 mph at Dunkerton IA.
Unseasonably hot weather continued in the south central
U.S. Pueblo CO equalled their May record with a high of
98 degrees, and the high of 106 degrees at Midland TX
marked a record six straight days of 100 degree heat.
In 1990 A cold front crossing the western U.S. produced snow over
parts of Oregon, California, Nevada, Idaho and Utah, with
five inches reported at Austin NV, and four inches at
Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. Strong winds behind
the cold front sharply reduced visibilities in blowing
dust over central California, and two multi-vehicle
accidents resulted in one death and eighteen injuries.
In northern Idaho, a cloud-burst washed tons of topsoil,
and rocks as large as footballs, into the valley town of
Culdesac.

In 1894 Six inches of snow blanketed Kentucky. Just four days
earlier as much as ten inches of snow had fallen across
Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. Six days earlier a
violent storm had wrecked nine ships on Lake Michigan.
In 1930 A tornado touched down near the town of Pratt KS and
traveled at the incredibly slow speed of just 5 mph.
In 1940 Hail fell near Ada OK to a depth of six to eight inches.
Rainfall runoff left drifts of hail up to five feet high.
In 1987 Severe thunderstorms in southwest Texas spawned a couple
of tornadoes near Silverton, and produced golf ball size
hail east of the town of Happy. Thunderstorms also
produced large hail and damaging winds in Louisiana and
Texas.
In 1988 Thunderstorms produced severe weather in the southeastern
U.S. Thunderstorm winds gusted to 88 mph at Columbia SC.
Baseball size hail was reported near Tifton GA.
In 1989 Thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front produced
severe weather across the Upper Midwest through the day
and night. Thunderstorms spawned 30 tornadoes, and there
were 158 reports of large hail and damaging winds. A
strong (F-3) tornado caused five million dollars damage
at Corning IA, and a powerful (F-4) tornado caused five
million dollars damage at Traer IA. Thunderstorm winds
gusting to 88 mph killed one person and injured five
others at Stephensville WI.
In 1990 Severe thunderstorms spawned two dozen tornadoes from
Montana to Oklahoma. Four tornadoes carved a 109-mile
path across central Kansas. The third of the four
tornadoes blew 88 cars of an 125-car train off the track,
stacking them three to four cars high in some cases, and
the fourth tornado caused 3.9 million dollars damage.
The third tornado injured six persons who were trying to
escape in vehicles. A woman was "sucked out" of a truck
and said that at one time she was "airborne, trying to
run but my feet wouldn't touch the ground". She also saw
a live deer "flying through the air".
In 2014 Hurricane Amanda in the Eastern Pacific basin, reached
major hurricane status...the second earliest major
hurricane on record in the basin, behind only Hurricane
Bud of 2012. 24 hours later, she became a category 4
hurricane with 140 mph winds...making her the second
strongest May hurricane in the Eastern Pacific basin
on record, behind Hurricane Adolph in 2001. Just 6 hours
later, she jumped to 155 mph winds, just under category
5 strength...making her the strongest May hurricane on
record in the Eastern Pacific Basin during the satellite
era. She began weakening late on the 25th (24th-25th).

In 1917 A tornado ripped through southeastern Kansas, traveling
65 mph. The average speed was a record for any tornado.
In 1955 Two tornadoes struck the town of Blackwell OK within a
few minutes time during the late evening. The tornadoes
killed 18 persons and injured more than 500 others.
Early the next morning a tornado virtually obliterated
the small community of Udall KS killing 80 persons and
injuring 270 persons. More than half the persons in the
community were killed or injured by the tornado.
In 1987 Thunderstorms spawned 15 tornadoes in West Texas. One
thunderstorm spawned a powerful tornado near Gruver TX,
along with golf ball size hail and 75 mph winds. A man
on a boat on Lake Bistineau in northwest Louisiana was
struck and killed by lightning, while the other three
persons in the boat were unharmed. The man reportedly
stood up in the boat and asked to be struck by lightning.
In 1988 Unseasonably cool weather prevailed in the Upper Midwest.
Marquette MI reported a record low of 26 degrees.
Thunderstorms in the north central U.S. produced wind
gusts to 62 mph at Idaho Falls ID, and produced 4 inches
of rain in less than four hours in northern Buffalo
County.
In 1989 Thunderstorms developing ahead of a strong cold front
produced severe weather from Oklahoma to Ohio through the
day and night. Thunderstorms spawned nine tornadoes, and
there were 155 reports of large hail and damaging winds.
Hail three and a half inches in diameter was reported at
Dittmer MO, and thunderstorm winds gusting to 90 mph
caused twenty million dollars damage at Rockville IN.
In 1990 Evening thunderstorms spawned four tornadoes in Kansas
and Missouri, and there were three dozen reports of large
hail or damaging winds. Thunderstorms produced hail two
inches in diameter at Cole Camp, and wind gusts to 72 mph
at Rosebud. Heavy thunderstorm rains produced flash
flooding in central Missouri. Flood-waters swept through
Washington State Park southwest of Saint Louis, and
nearly one hundred persons had to be rescued from water
as much as twenty feet deep. The floodwaters swept away
a number of vehicles, some were carried as much as four
miles away.
In 2013 Intense rainfall, over a foot in some areas, led to
widespread flash flooding in south Texas, especially
around the San Antonio, Texas area. Over 9 1/2 inches
of rain fell in the San Antonio area alone.

In 1771 A famous Virginia flood occurred as heavy rains in the
mountains brought all rivers in the state to record high
levels.
In 1917 A tornado touched down near Louisiana MO about noon
and remained on the ground for a distance of 293 miles,
finally lifting seven hours and twenty minutes later in
eastern Jennings County IN. The twister cut a swath of
destruction two and a half miles wide through Mattoon IL.
There were 101 persons killed in the tornado, including
53 at Mattoon, and 38 at Charleston IL. Damage from the
storm totalled 2.5 million dollars. Debris was carried
50 miles in some cases.
In 1984 Thunderstorms during the late evening and early morning
hours produced 6 to 13 inches of rain at Tulsa OK in six
hours (8.63 inches at the airport). Flooding claimed 14
lives and caused 90 million dollars property damage.
4600 cars, 743 houses, and 387 apartments were destroyed
or severely damaged in the flood.
In 1987 Thunderstorms in southwest Iowa spawned five tornadoes
and produced up to ten inches of rain. Seven inches of
rain at Red Oak forced evacuation of nearly 100 persons
from the town. Record flooding took place in southwest
Iowa the last twelve days of May as up to 17 inches of
rain drenched the area. Total damage to crops and
property was estimated at 16 million dollars.
In 1988 There was "frost on the roses" in the Upper Ohio Valley
and the Central Appalachian Mountain Region. Thirteen
cities reported record low temperatures for the date,
including Youngstown OH with a reading of 30 degrees.
Evening thunderstorms in North Dakota produced wind gusts
to 75 mph at Jamestown.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced large hail in eastern Oklahoma
during the pre-dawn hours, and again during the evening
and night. Hail two inches in diameter was reported near
Prague, and thunderstorm winds gusted to 70 mph near
Kenefic.
In 1990 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from eastern
Colorado to western Arkansas and northeastern Texas.
Severe thunderstorms spawned three tornadoes, and there
were eighty-eight reports of large hail or damaging
winnds. Evening thunderstorms over central Oklahoma
spawned strong tornadoes east of Hinton and east of
Binger, produced hail three inches in diameter at Minco,
and produced wind gusts to 85 mph at Blanchard.
In 2001 A tornado took the roof off of a retirement home in
Fort Wayne, Indiana...forcing the residents to a nearby
shelter.

In 1896 A massive tornado struck Saint Louis MO killing
306 persons and causing thirteen million dollars damage.
The tornado path was short, but cut across a densely
populated area. It touched down six miles west of Eads
Bridge in Saint Louis and widened to a mile as it crossed
into East Saint Louis. The tornado was the most
destructive of record in the U.S. up until that time. It
pierced a five-eighths inch thick iron sheet with a two
by four inch pine plank. A brilliant display of
lightning accompanied the storm.
In 1987 Severe thunderstorms in West Texas produced baseball size
hail at Crane, hail up to three and a half inches in
diameter at Post, and grapefruit size hail south of
Midland. Five days of flooding commenced in Oklahoma.
Thunderstorms produced 7 to 9 inches of rain in central
Oklahoma. Oklahoma City reported 4.33 inches of rain in
six hours. Up to six inches of rain caused flooding in
north central Texas.
In 1988 Sunny and warm weather prevailed across much of the
nation to kick off the Memorial Day weekend. Afternoon
thunderstorms in southern Florida caused the mercury at
Miami to dip to a record low reading of 69 degrees.
In 1989 Unseasonably hot weather prevailed in the southeastern
U.S. Ten cities reported record high temperatures for
the date as readings soared into the 90s. Lakeland FL
reported a record high of 99 degrees, and Biloxi MS
reported a temperature of 90 degrees along with a
relative humidity of 75 percent.
In 1990 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from north central
Texas to the Central Gulf Coast Region. Severe
thunderstorms spawned four tornadoes, and there were
eighty-one reports of large hail or damaging winds. Late
afternoon thunderstorms over southeast Louisiana produced
high winds which injured twenty-seven persons at an
outdoor music concert in Baton Rouge, and high winds
which gusted to 78 mph at the Lake Ponchartrain Causeway.
In 1997 An F5 tornado decimated the small town of Jarrell, Texas.
27 died, and total damage was estimated at $40 million.
Concrete slab foundations were all that remained of some
buildings in the path of the tornado.

In 1942 The latest snowstorm of record for the state of Iowa left
10 inches at LeMars, 8 inches at Cherokee, and 7.5 inches
at Waukon. Afternoon highs were in the lower 30s in
parts of northwestern Iowa.
In 1947 A storm produced heavy snow across Wisconsin, with ten
inches reported at Gay Mills. The snow damaged fruit and
other trees, and downed power lines. The storm was
followed by the coldest weather of the month for much of
the High Plains Region and Missouri Valley. Williston ND
reported a low of 21 degrees the morning of the 28th, and
the next morning Cheyenne WY reported a morning low of 16
above zero.
In 1987 Thunderstorms produced torrential rains in Oklahoma and
northern Texas. Lake Altus OK was deluged with nine
inches of rain. Up to eight inches drenched northern
Texas, and baseball size hail was reported north of
Seminole and at Knickerbocker. Ten to 13 inch rains
soaked central Oklahoma the last five days of May
resulting in an estimated 65 million dollars damage, and
forcing several thousand persons to evacuate their homes,
many by boat or helicopter.
In 1988 A sharp cold front began to usher cold, wet and windy
weather into the western U.S. Thunderstorms in the Great
Plains Region produced wind gusts to 80 mph near
Brokkings SD.
In 1989 Unseasonably hot weather continued in Florida. Five
cities reported record high temperatures for the date.
The record high of 98 degrees at Lakeland FL was their
fifth in a row. Thunderstorms produced severe weather in
Florida late in the day, with golf ball size hail
reported at Kissimmee.
In 1990 Two to five inches of rain over southeastern Ohio on the
28th and 29th capped an exceptionally wet month of May,
and triggered widespread flooding. Flooding which
resulted claimed three lives, and caused millions of
dollars damage. Numerous roads in southeastern Ohio were
flooded and impassable, and many other roads were blocked
by landslides.
In 2001 A tornado struck three mobile home parks in Elicott, CO...
east of Colorado Springs...several injuries and extensive
damage resulted.
In 2012 Tropical Storm Beryl came ashore near Jacksonville Beach,
Florida with 70 mph winds...making it the strongest
pre-June tropical cyclone to make a U.S. landfall.
In 2013 (28th-June 2nd) Several days of severe weather occurred
across much of the U.S. Stretching from Texas to the Upper
Midwest...east into the Ohio Valley and New England...many
areas experienced severe storms with tornadoes, large hail,
damaging wind, and flooding rain. The storms started on May
28, and lasted into early June.

In 1877 A "terrific" two day long sandstorm blasted Yuma AZ.
(28th-29th)
In 1951 A massive hailstorm, from Wallace to Kearney County in
Kansas, caused six million dollars damage to crops.
In 1953 A tornado, 600 yards wide at times, killed two persons on
its 20 mile path from southwest of Fort Rice ND into
Emmons County. Nearly every building in Fort Rice was
damaged. The Catholic church was leveled, with some pews
jammed four feet into the ground.
In 1987 Thunderstorms in West Texas produced softball size hail
at Lamesa, and hail up to twelve inches deep east of
Dimmitt. Thunderstorms also spawned seven tornadoes in
West Texas, including one which injured three persons at
Wolfforth. Thunderstorms deluged the Texas Hill Country
with up to 11 inches of rain. Severe flooding along the
Medino, Hondo, Seco, Sabinal and Frio rivers caused more
than fifty million dollars damage.
In 1988 A powerful cold front brought snow and high winds to
parts of the western U.S. Austin NV was blanketed with
ten inches of snow, and winds gusted to 75 mph at the
Mojave Airport in California. Strong southerly winds and
unseasonably warm weather prevailed in the north central
U.S. Glasgow MT equalled their record for the month of
May with a high of 102 degrees.
In 1989 Wintry weather gripped parts of the northwestern U.S. for
the second day in a row. Great Falls MT was blanketed
with 12 inches of snow, which pushed their total for the
winter season to a record 117.4 inches. Six inches of
snow whitened the Cascade Mountains of Oregon.
In 1990 Afternoon and evening thunderstorms produced severe
weather from north central Colorado to the northern half
of Texas. Severe thunderstorms spawned four tornadoes,
and there were seventy reports of large hail or damaging
winds. Midday thunderstorms produced wind gusts to 90
mph at Hobart OK, and produced up to three and a half
inches of rain in eastern Colorado in four hours.
In 2001 Hurricane Adolph became the strongest May hurricane in
the Eastern Pacific with 145 mph winds.
In 2013 Hurricane Barbara made landfall in the Mexican State of
Chiapas as a category 1 hurricane. This is the easternmost
landfull location for an Eastern North Pacific Hurricane
since reliable records began in 1966, and it is also the
second earliest hurricane landfall in the reliable record.

In 1879 A major outbreak of severe weather occurred in Kansas and
western Missouri. In Kansas, tornadoes killed eighteen
persons at Delphos, and thirty persons at Irving. Two
tornadoes struck the town of Irving within a few minutes
time virtually wiping the small Kansas community off the
map. The second tornado was perhaps two miles wide, and
exhibited multiple vortices.
In 1948 A railroad bed acting as a dam gave way during a
flood along the Columbia River destroying the town of
Vanport OR. The nearly 19,000 residents escaped with
little more than the clothes on their backs.
Twenty carloads of glass were needed in Denver CO to
replace that destroyed by a severe hailstorm.
In 1951 After a tornado passed east of Scotsbluff, Nebraska, a
bean was found embedded 1" into an uncracked egg.
In 1987 Unseasonably warm weather prevailed in the eastern U.S.
Eighteen cities, from Virginia to Ohio and Michigan,
reported record high temperatures for the date. After-
noon highs of 97 degrees at Baltimore MD and Washington
D.C., and 98 degrees at Newark NJ, were records for the
date.
In 1988 Memorial Day heralded heavy snow in some of the mountains
and higher passes of Wyoming, closing roads in
Yellowstone Park. McDonald Pass MT was blanketed with
eight inches of snow, while the temperature at Miles City
MT soared to 94 degrees. A "supercell" thunderstorm in
west Texas produced baseball size hail in Bailey and Lamb
counties, and up to five inches of rain in less than an
hour.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from the Upper
Mississippi Valley to the Upper Ohio Valley during the
day. A powerful (F-4) tornado injured three persons and
caused a million dollars damage at New Providence IA.
Baseball size hail was reported at Blue Earth MN.
In 1990 Thunderstorms developing along a warm front spawned
fourteen tornadoes in northeastern Texas during the late
afternoon and evening hours. The thunderstorms also
produced baseball size hail near Marshall, wind gusts to
77 mph at Commerce, and up to five inches of rain.
Thunderstorms over southwestern Kansas produced up to six
inches of rain.
In 2003 The record tornadic swarm of May continued, with 25
more tornadoes in north and central Illinois. Lockport was
was the hardest hit.
In 2004 Over the Memorial Holiday Weekend, 25 states reported 1290
severe weather reports...805 of those were on Sunday
alone. Of the reports, 196 were tornadoes (186 of those on
May 30 alone), 699 wind damage, and the remainder hail or
flooding. According to the National Weather Service, more
than a dozen tornadoes had touched down in 10 Indiana
counties. This was the third time in three years that
powerful tornadoes have ripped across central and southern
Indiana. Marengo in southern Indiana was hard hit, with at
least one fatality, four injuries, and numerous homes
damaged or destroyed. But Indiana was not alone in dealing
with weather related problems. According to news reports
several people in Kansas and Nebraska were injured by the
weekend's tornadoes which also ripped through parts of
those states.
In 2013 A massive tornado roared through the Oklahoma City area,
and adjacent areas...including areas of Moore that were
hit by an EF-5 tornado just days earlier. Another tornado
hit the St. Louis area...but, it went just north of the
area. These were just 2 of the severe weather events that
a large part of the country that day. Three storm chasers
were part of the fatalities in Oklahoma...and three from
The Weather Channel were injured by one of the rain
wrapped tornadoes. The tornado that hit El Reno was
upgraded to an EF-5. Doppler On Wheels recorded 296 mph
winds (30th-31st). Plus, the tornado was 2.6 miles wide,
making it the widest tornado ever documented.

In 1889 The Johnstown disaster occurred, the worst flood tradgedy
in U.S. history. Heavy rains collapsed the South Fork
Dam sending a thirty foot wall of water rushing down the
already flooded Conemaugh Valley. The wall of water,
traveling as fast as twenty-two feet per second, swept
away all structures, objects and people. 2100 persons
perished in the flood.
In 1941 Thunderstorms deluged Burlington KS with 12.59 inches of
rain to establish a 24 hour rainfall record for the
state.
In 1985 Severe thuunderstorms spawned forty-one tornadoes across
the Lower Great Lakes Region and southeastern Ontario
which killed 74 persons.
In 1987 Thunderstorms in New England produced wind gusts of 70 to
90 mph at Worcester MA and Northboro MA, and hail an inch
and a half in diameter at Williston VT. Unseasonably hot
weather prevailed in the northeastern U.S. The afternoon
high of 94 degrees at Portland ME was a record for the
month of May.
In 1988 Hot and humid weather prevailed in the eastern U.S.
Thirteen cities reported record high temperatures for the
date. Cape Hatteras NC reported their first ninety
degree day in May in 115 years of records. "Dust buster"
thunderstorms in northwest Texas drenched Amarillo with
more than three inches of rain.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced severe weather and torrential
rains in northern Indiana, northern Ohio and southern
Lower Michigan. Saint John IN was drenched with four
inches of rain in two hours, and Woodland MI was deluged
with two inches in twenty minutes. Pittsburgh PA
reported a record 6.55 inches of rain for the month of
May, with measurable rain reported on twenty-five days
during the month.
In 1990 Afternoon and evening thunderstorms developing along
a warm front produced severe weather from northwest Texas
to southeastern Louisiana. The thunderstorms spawned
sixteen tornadoes, including thirteen in northwest Texas.
One tornado hit the town of Spearman TX causing more than
a million dollars damage, and seven other tornadoes were
reported within twenty-five miles of Spearman.
Thunderstorms over northwest Texas also produced baseball
size hail at Monahans, and wind gusts to 80 mph at
Paducah.

In 1812 Apple trees at New Haven CT did not blossom until the
first of June, the latest such occurrence during the
period beginning in 1794. Snow whitened the ground in
Cleveland OH and Rochester NY.
In 1903 A strong tornado just 50 to 75 yards in width killed many
persons around the Gainesville GA Cotton Mill. The
tornado strengthened and widened near the end of its four
mile path, killing 40 persons at New Holland GA. A total
of 104 persons were killed in the tornado.
In 1980 A man from Falmouth Maine, who had been blind since a 1971
truck accident, was struck by lightning, and regained his
eyesight.
In 1987 Severe thunderstorms in the Upper Mississippi Valley and
the Lower Ohio Valley produced wind gusts to 81 mph at
Albert Lea Airport in southern Minnesota, and baseball
size hail around Otterbein IN, Sarona WI, and Danville
IL. Two inches of hail totally destroyed 5000 acres of
corn and soybean north of Danville.
In 1988 Thunderstorms drenched north central Texas with
torrential rains, with more than 14 inches reported in
Commanche County. Afternoon thunderstorm in New Jersey
and Pennsylvania produced wind gusts to 70 mph.
In 1989 Thunderstorms developing during the afternoon over the
Southern Plains Regionn produced severe weather through
the evening and the night, spawning nine tornadoes.
Thunderstorms produced wind gusts to 80 mph at Alpine TX,
and baseball size hail at Balmorhea TX, Fluvanna TX, and
in Borden County TX.
In 2011 Four were killed, and forty were injured as an EF3 tornado
touched down in Springfield, Massachustts, causing
extensive damage. Intense lightning affected the Boston,
Massachusetts area as well.

took out a span of Long Bridge, and flooded streets near
the river. The flood stage reached was not again
equalled until 1936.
In 1917 The temperature at Tribune KS dipped to 30 degrees to
establish a state record for the month of June.
In 1949 A tornado northeast of Alfalfa OK circled an area one
mile in radius.
In 1985 Lightning struck a house, broke a bedroom window, and
jumped to a metal frame bed. A man was killed but his
wife was unharmed by the lightning.
In 1986 (2nd-4th) A tropical disturbance brought flooding rains
across parts of the Greater Antilles. 240,000 people lost
their homes.
In 1987 Thunderstorms spawned seven tornadoes in West Texas and
six tornadoes in Illinois. Thunderstorms in Illinois
produced wind gusts to 70 mph at McComb and Mattoon.
Thunderstorms in southern Texas produced 5.5 inches of
rain south of Seguin, and up to eight inches of rain in
Washington County.
In 1988 Severe thunderstorms in Texas and Oklahoma produced hail
more than three inches in diameter near Stilwater OK, and
softball size hail in Jones County of north central
Texas. Baseball size hail and 70 mph winds caused an
estimated 100 million dollars damage around Abilene TX.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced severe weather across much of the
south central U.S. through most of the day and night.
Thunderstorms spawned a dozen tornadoes, and there were
123 reports of large hail and damaging winds.
Thunderstorm winds gusted to 78 mph at Russell KS, and
baseball size hail was reported at Denver CO, Cuthbert
TX, and in Reeves County TX. Afternoon thunderstorms in
southern New England produced wind gusts to 120 mph at
Fitchburg MA causing five million dollars damage.
In 2001 A tornado struck London, Kentucky...causing widespread
damage and injuries.
In 2004 (2nd-3rd) An intense complex of thunderstorms roared across
portions of Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana, before
falling apart when it reached the Gulf Of Mexico. Numerous
reports of severe weather were noted...most of tennis ball
or larger hail, straight line winds near 100 mph, and a few
tornadoes as well. Widespread damage and power outages were
noted in the affected areas.
In 2015 Hurricane Blanca became the earliest formation of the
second hurricane of the season in the Eastern Pacific basin
since reliable records began in 1971.

In 1921 A cloudburst near Pikes Peak CO killed 120 people.
Pueblo CO was flooded by a twenty-five foot crest of the
Arkansas River, killing 70 persons. Fourteen inches of
rain was reported at Boggs Flat, where a hard surface
road through nearly level country was washed out to a
depth of seven feet.
In 1959 Thunderstorms in northwestern Kansas produced up to
eighteen inches of hail near Salden during the early
evening. Crops were completely destroyed, and total
damage from the storm was about half a million dollars.
Hail fell for a record eighty-five minutes. The temp-
erature dropped from near 80 degrees prior to the storm
to 38 degrees at the height of the storm.
In 1968 For the first time in June since 1892, not a single clear
day was observed in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan for the month.
In 1987 Six days of flooding in South Texas culminated with five
to six inch rains from Bexar County to Bandera County,
and five to nine inches rains in Gonzalez and Wilson
Counties. Total crop damage was estimated at 500 million
dollars.
In 1988 Early morning thunderstorms in southern Texas produced
wind gusts to 86 mph at Port Isabel, and wind gusts to 83
mph at South Padre Island. Unseasonably hot weather
prevailed from the Southern Plateau Region to the
Northern High Plains. Fourteen cities reported record
high temperatures for the date.
In 1989 Thunderstorms developing over the Southern Plains Region
during the afternoon hours produced severe weather into
the night. Thunderstorms spawned eleven tornadoes, and
there were 169 reports of large hail and damaging winds.
Thunderstorm winds gusted to 80 mph at Newcastle Ok and
Wilson OK. Softball size hail was reported at Monahans
TX, Childress TX and Groesbeck TX. Monahans TX reported
six million dollars damage. Five inches of rain deluged
Geronimo OK.
In 2012 A severe thunderstorm dropped 4 1/2 inch diameter hail
at Smithville, Arkansas (northeast Arkansas).

In 1825 A hurricane struck Long Island NY leveling trees and
causing damage to ships. The early season hurricane,
which originated around Cuba, caused major damage along
the Atlantic coast from Charleston SC to New York City.
Many were lost at sea.
In 1860 Iowa's "Commanche Tornado", with wind speeds estimated in
excess of 300 mph, was unquestionably one of the worst
experienced by early settlers, with nearly a million
dollars damage.
In 1920 A hard surface road through nearly level country in Boggs
Flat, Colorado was washed out to a depth of 7 feet after 14
inches of rain.
In 1982 A four day storm began over New England which produced up
to 14 inches of rain in southern Connecticut breaching
twenty-three dams and breaking two others. Damage was
estimated at more than 276 million dollars.
In 1987 Early morning thunderstorms in south Texas produced
6.5 inches of rain at Hockheim, and five inches at
Hallettsville, in just a few hours. Afternoon thunder-
storms in Virginia deluged northern Halifax County
with 5.5 inches of rain in two hours. Thunderstorms
produced wind gusts to 76 mph at Dusty WA, and wind gusts
to 88 mph at Swanquarter NC.
In 1988 A dozen cities in the eastern U.S. reported record low
temperatures for the date, including Atlantic City NJ
with a reading of 40 degrees. Fifteen cities in the
north central U.S. reported record high temperatures for
the date, including Glasgow MT and Havre MT with readings
of 102 degrees.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from the Southern
Plains Region and the Lower Mississippi Valley to the
Southern Atlantic Coast Region during the day and into
the night. Just four tornadoes were reported, but there

In 1859 Frost was reported from Iowa to New England. The
temperature dipped to 25 degrees in New York State, and
up to two inches of snow blanketed Ohio. The cold and
snow damaged the wheat crop.
In 1908 Helena MT was deluged with 3.67 inches of rain to establish
their all-time 24 hour rainfall record. (4th-5th)
In 1916 A tornado struck the town of Warren AR killing 83 persons.
There were 125 deaths that day in a tornado outbreak across
Missouri and Arkansas.
In 1917 Residents near Topeka KS reported disk-shaped hailstones
six to ten inches in diameter, and two to three inches
thick. The hailstorm was accompanied by a tornado.
In 1987 International Falls MN dipped to a record low reading of
34 degrees during the morning. Williston ND and Glasgow
MT reported record warm afternoon highs of 94 degrees.
Major flooding was reported along the Guadelupe River in
South Texas, with the water level at Cuero reaching 18
feet above flood stage.
In 1988 Twenty cities in the south central and eastern U.S.
reported record low temperatures for the date, including
Asheville NC with a reading of 40 degrees. Fifteen
cities in the north central U.S. reported record high
temperatures for the date. The high of 108 degrees at
Glasgow MT was a record for June.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from the Lower
Mississippi Valley to the Southern Atlantic Coast during
the day and into the night. Four tornadoes were
reported, and there were 87 reports of large hail and
damaging winds.
In 2001 Tropical Storm Allison formed rapidly in the Gulf Of
Mexico, and headed toward southeast Texas. Although a
"hybrid system", the storm dumped torrential, flooding
rains on south Texas...with areas from Houston to New
Orleans, and elsewhere...getting over 12 inches of
rain in a few hours time...with larger storm totals.
There were also a few tornadoes spawned by the remnants
of Allison...which moved little once inland. She finally
moved offshore and headed east into Alabama, but not
before dropping storm totals of near 4 feet, causing
extensive flooding, damage, and several deaths. The
remnants continued east northeast into Georgia, and
then moved up the eastern seaboard, and finally offshore
to merge with a cold front. (5th-18th).
In 2013 A severe thunderstorm formed a waterspout on the
Mississippi River, which was confirmed by the Coast Guard,
just northwest of Bartlett, Tennessee, near Memphis.
In 2021 At least a dozen high temperature records were tied or
broken from the Mid-Atlantic to New England; ranging from
the mid 80s to the mid 90s. Some records were originally
set as far back as 1953.

to commence the famous "year without a summer".
In 1894 One of the greatest floods in U.S. history occurred as
the Williamette River overflowed to inundate half of the
business district of Portland OR.
In 1975 A tornado, reportedly spinning backwards (clockwise), was
sighted near Alva OK.
In 1977 Severe thunderstorms with large hail and winds to 100 mph
caused one million dollars damage around Norfolk VA. A
forty-two foot fishing boat capsized near the Chesapeake
Bay Bridge Tunnel drowning 13 of the 27 persons on board.
In 1987 Thunderstorms in southern California produced one inch
hail at Mount Pinos, and marble size hail at Palmdale.
Thunderstorms in southeastern Arizona produced heavy rain
leaving some washes under four feet of water. Six cities
in the north central U.S. reported record high
temperatures for the date as readings soared into the
upper 90s.
In 1988 Seventeen cities in the north central U.S. reported
record high temperatures for the date, including
Williston ND with a reading of 104 degrees. Thunder-
storms in Florida produced wind gusts to 65 mph which
damaged two mobile homes northwest of Melbourne injuring
six people.
In 1989 Thunderstorms developing during the late morning hours
produced severe weather through the afternoon and night.
Thunderstorms spawned 13 tornadoes, and there were 154
reports of large hail and damaging winds. A strong (F-3)
tornado injured six persons at Lorenzo TX, and
thunderstorm winds gusting to 100 mph killed one person
at Glasscock City TX. Softball size hail was reported at
Lipscomb TX and Glen Cove TX.
In 2014 A supercell thunderstorm near Pilger, NE produced two
EF-4 tornadoes simultaneously. Another EF-4 tornado cut
a swath through rural areas near Alpena, SD.

In 1816 A famous June snow occurred in the northeastern U.S.
Danville VT reported drifts of snow and sleet twenty
inches deep. The Highlands were white all day, and
flurries were observed as far south as Boston MA.
In 1972 Richmond VA experienced its worst flood of record as
rains from Hurricane Agnes pushed the water level at the
city locks to a height of 36.5 feet, easily topping the
previous record of thirty feet set in 1771.
In 1987 Thunderstorms in the Laramie Mountains of eastern Wyoming
produced golf ball size hail, and up to five inches of
rain, in just one hour. Half a dozen cities in the Upper
Mississippi Valley reported record high temperatures for
the date, including La Crosse WI with a reading of 97
degrees.
In 1988 Snow whitened some of the mountains of northern
California and northwestern Nevada. Twenty-six cities in
the central and eastern U.S. reported record high
temperatures for the date, including Rapid City SD with
a reading of 104 degrees, and Miles City MT with a high
of 106 degrees.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from southern
Oklahoma and eastern Texas to northwestern Florida
through the day and night. Thunderstorms spawned
22 tornadoes, including a dozen in Louisiana, and there
were 119 reports of large hail and damaging winds. A (F-2)
tornado at Gross Tete LA killed two persons, injured
thirty others, and another (F-2) tornado injured 60
persons at Lobdell LA. Softball size hail was reported
at Hillsboro TX.
In 1989 A DC-8 crashed into the jungle attempting to land in a thick
fog shrouding the Paramaribo (Suriname) airport.
In 2003 An unsettled weather pattern that began over Arkansas on
7th continued for several days afterwards. On the 10th,
severe thunderstorms with hail, high winds, heavy rain,
and intense lightning plagued much of Arkansas. A house
in west Little Rock was damaged by a lightning strike.
On the 11th, much of the southern half of Arkansas was
hit again by severe weather, and flooding rains. Some
areas got from 3 to 10 inches of rain overnight, with
washed out roads and widespread flash flooding the
result.
In 2021 (7th-10th) Ten to more than 15 inches of rain fell across
portions of southeast Arkansas in just 48 hours. Widespread
flooding (much of it catastrophic) occurred in Star City,
Varner, Pine Bluff, Stuttgart, Dumas, and McGehee. Water
got into many homes, with crop and road damage (washouts)
in several areas. Also on June 7, several thunderstorms
showed rotation from Malvern to Arkadelphia, but there
were no apparent tornado touchdowns. A brief EF-0 tornado
occurred in a field at Blakemore in Lonoke County on the
9th, with another small tornado near Ferda in Jefferson
County, and Little Rock got a quick 1.10 inches of rain.
On the 10th, near Pinnacle, west-northwest of Little Rock,
3 inches of rain fell in just under an hour.

In 1953 The worst tornado of record for the state of Michigan
killed 116 persons. Flint MI was hardest hit. The
tornado, half a mile in width, destroyed 200 homes on
Coldwater Road killing entire families.
In 1966 A tornado ripped right through the heart of the capitol
city of Topeka KS killing sixteen persons and causing 100
million dollars damage. The tornado, which struck during
the evening, cut a swath of near total destruction eight
miles long and four blocks wide. It was the most
destructive tornado of record up until that time.
In 1974 Severe thunderstorms spawned at least twenty-three
tornadoes in Oklahoma during the afternoon and evening
hours. One of the tornadoes struck the town Drumright
killing sixteen persons and injuring 150 others.
A tornado struck the National Weather Service office in
Oklahoma City, and two tornadoes hit the city of Tulsa.
Thunderstorms in Tulsa also produced as much as ten
inches of rain. Total damage from the storms was around
thirty million dollars. It was the worst natural
disaster of record for Tulsa.
Heavy rains across Arkansas brought 8-10 inches of rain.
Flash flooding occurred at Siloam Springs in northwest
Arkansas, and at El Dorado in south central Arkansas,
where 12 inches of rain fell.
In 1987 Thunderstorms in the northeastern U.S. produced large
hail and damaging winds in Vermont injuring two persons.
Thunderstorms in Ohio produced wind gusts to 75 mph near
Akron, and deluged Pittsfield with two inches of rain in
thirty minutes.
In 1988 Overnight thunderstorms in Iowa produced 5.20 inches of
rain at Coon Rapids. Thunderstorms in the Florida Keys
drenched Tavernier with 7.16 inches of rain in 24 hours.
Eleven cities in the central U.S. reported record high
temperatures for the date.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced severe weather over the Central
Gulf Coast Region during the day and evening. Severe
thunderstorms spawned 17 tornadoes, including one which
injured ten persons and caused a million dollars damage
at Orange Beach AL. Thunderstorm winds gusting to 90 mph
killed three persons and injured four others at Mobile
AL. Thunderstorms also deluged Walnut Hill FL and Avalon
Beach FL with eight inches of rain.
In 2012 (8th-10th) Torrential rains from thunderstorms repeatedly
going over the same areas deluged portions of Alabama, the

In 1953 A tornado hit the town of Worcester MA killing ninety
persons. The northeastern states usually remain free of
destructive tornadoes, however in this case a low
pressure system, responsible for producing severe
thunderstorms in Michigan and Ohio the previous day,
brings severe weather to New Hampshire and central
Massachusetts. The tornado mangled steel towers built to
withstand winds of 375 mph. The tornado, up to a mile in
width at times, tracked 46 miles through Worcester
County. Debris from the tornado fell in the Boston area,
and adjacent Atlantic Ocea.
In 1972 A cloudburst along the eastern slopes of the Black Hills
of South Dakota produced as much as 14 inches of rain
resulting in the Rapid City flash flood disaster. The
rains, which fell in about four hours time, caused the
Canyon Lake Dam to collapse. A wall of water swept
through the city drowning 237 persons, and causing more
than 100 million dollars property damage.
In 1987 Lightning struck "Tire Mountain" near Denver CO,
destroying two million tires out of a huge pile of six
million tires. Thunderstorms spawned three tornadoes
around Denver, and a man was killed at Conifer CO when
strong thunderstorm winds lifted up a porch and dropped
it on him. A thunderstorm near Compton MD produced two
inch hail, and high winds which destroyed twenty barns
and ten houses injuring five persons.
In 1988 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from North Carolina
to the Central Gulf Coast Region. Hail in North Carolina
caused more than five million dollars damage to property,
and more than sixty million dollars damage to crops.
Hail three and a half inches in diameter was reported at
New Bern NC. Thunderstorms in the Central High Plains
produced 18 inches of hail at Fountain CO. The
temperature at Del Rio TX soared to an all-time record
high of 112 degrees.
In 1989 Severe weather abated for a date, however, showers and
thunderstorms continued to drench the eastern U.S. with
torrential rains. Milton FL was deluged with 15.47
inches in 24 hours. Record heat and prolonged drought in
south central Texas left salt deposits on power lines and
insulators near the coast, and when nighttime dew causing
arcing, the city of Brownsville was plunged into darkness.
In 2010 (9th-11th) Intense rainfall lead to major flash flooding
over several areas. On the 9th, the system dumped more than
evacuations ordered. On the 10th, similar precipitation
amounts closed roads in Tyler, Texas, where there were also
many rescues. On the 11th, 6 to 7 inches of rain, caused
the Little Missouri River to rise over 20 feet in under 3
hours, cresting at a record of 23 feet...in the Albert Pike
Campground area near Langley, Arkansas. Tragically, 20
people...including children (one as young as 2 years old),
drowned in the event in southwest Arkansas.

In 1752 It is believed that this was the day Benjamin Franklin
narrowly missed electrocution while flying a kite during
a thunderstorm to determine if lightning is related to
electricity.
In 1957 A dust devil at North Yarmouth ME lifted a 600-1000 pound
chicken shelter into the air and carried it 25 feet. It
landed upright with only slight damage. It is unknown
whether any eggs were scrambled.
In 1958 A woman was sucked through the window of her home in
El Dorado KS by a powerful tornado, and was carried sixty
feet away. Beside her was found a broken phonograph
record entitled "Stormy Weather".
In 1969 Hail damaged about 80% of the homes and businesses (5600
structures) in Plainview, Texas.
In 1987 Thunderstorms produced 2 to 4 inch rains in southern
Texas. Two and a half inches of rain at Juno TX caused
flooding and closed a nearby highway. Flooding on the
northwest side of San Antonio claimed one life as a boy
was swept into a culvert. Thunderstorms in the north
central U.S. produced an inch and a half of small hail at
Monida Pass MT.
In 1988 Three dozen cities, mostly in the eastern U.S., reported
record low temperatures for the date, including Elkins WV
with a reading of 33 degrees. Unseasonably hot weather
continued in the Northern High Plains Region. The record
high of 105 degeees at Williston ND was their seventh in
eight days.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced severe weather through the day and
night across much of the southern half of the Great
Plains Region. Thunderstorms spawned 14 tornadoes, and
there were 142 reports of large hail and damaging winds.
Hail three inches in diameter caused three millions
dollars damage at Carlsbad NM. Hail four inches in
diameter was reported at Estelline TX and Stinnett TX.
Thunderstorm winds gusted to 80 mph at Odessa TX.
In 2010 (10th-11th) A severe flash flood struck the Albert Pike
Recreation Area in southwest Arkansas. Nearly 2 dozen
perished in floodwaters, caused by slow moving storms.

In 1881 Severe thunderstorms spawned more than half a dozen
tornadoes in the Lower Missouri Valley. Five of the
tornadoes touched down near Saint Joseph MO. In south
central Kansas a tornado nearly wiped out the town of
Floral. Hail and high winds struck Iowa and southern
Minnesota. In Minnesota, Blue Earth City reported five
inches of rain in one hour.
In 1899 A tornado struck New Richmond, WI, killing 117, and
injuring 200.
In 1947 A heavy wet snow blanketed much of southern and central
Wyoming, and gave many places their heaviest and latest
snow of record. Totals included 18.4 inches at Lander,
8.7 inches at Cheyenne, and 4.5 inches at Casper. (11th-
12th)
In 1969 Record late season snows covered parts of Montana. Five
inches was reported at Great Falls and east of Broadus.
Billings MT tied their June record with lows of 32
degrees on the 12th and the 13th.
In 1983 The state of Utah was beseiged by floods and mudslides.
Streets in downtown Salt Lake City were sandbagged and
turned into rivers of relief. The town of Thistle was
completely inundated as a mudslide made a natural dam.
In 1987 Thunderstorms in Nebraska produced softball size hail
around Fremont and Ames, and 3.5 inches of rain in less
than one hour. Four and a half inches in less than an
hour caused flooding around Ithica NE. A tornado
destroyed a mobile home near Broken Bow NE injuring both
occupants.
In 1988 Fifteen cities in the southeastern U.S. reported record
low temperatures for the date, including Asheville with
a reading of 40 degrees. Drought conditions continued to
intensify across the eastern half of the nation. Rainfall
at Nashville TN was running 12.5 inches below normal.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from Tennessee
Valley to the Central Appalachians in the afternoon and
evening, and produced severe weather in Oklahoma and
Texas during the evening and night. Thunderstorms
spawned ten tornadoes, and there were 164 reports of
large hail and damaging winds. Thunderstorms produced
wind gusts to 100 mph at Amarillo TX, and wind gusts to
110 mph at Denton TX. Hail three inches in diameter was
reported at Tucumcari NM.
In 2013 (12th-13th) Widespread severe storms over the Midwest
during the late evening, became organized into a squall
line over Indiana before Midnight EDT. The line then
accelerated east across Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey
through Thursday morning, June 13, 2013 with an average '
forward speed of 47 mph. The bow echo/derecho traveled
over 400 miles in about 6 hours during its peak intensity
resulting in over 100 damaging wind reports. The most
significant damage appears to have occurred during the
late evening across parts of Indiana.
In 2014 Hurricane Cristina intensified rapidly to 150 mph in the
Eastern Pacific basin. She is the earliest second major
hurricane in the eastern Pacific, since reliable records
rbegan in 1971, eclipsing the former record of Darby in
2014 by 13 days. However, like Hurricane Amanda earlier
in the season, which also got to category 4 status,
Cristina is only a threat to shipping. With Cristina
also becoming a category 4, it's the first time that
there have been 2 category hurricanes through June in the
Eastern North Pacific basin, since the beginning of the
satellite era in 1966. Prior to Cristina, the earliest
second category 4 hurricane was Hurricane Elida in 1984,
which reached that threshold on July 1.

In 1889 Forest fires in northern Wisconsin and northeast
Minnesota were in the process of destroying millions of
dollars of board feet of timber.
In 1899 A tornado virtually wiped out the town of Herman, NE,
with the downtown area suffering heavy damage. The tornado
struck with little or no warning, killing 13, and injuring
many others.
In 1907 The temperature at Tamarack CA dipped to 2 above zero,
the lowest reading of record for June for the U.S.
The high that day was 30 degrees. Tamarack received
42 inches of snow between the 10th and the 13th. On the
13th the snow depth was 130 inches.
In 1984 Severe thunderstorms struck Denver deluging the city with
five inches of rain, and leaving up to six feet of water
in some places. Softball size hail smashed windshields
and ripped through metal cars. Snow plows had to be
called out.
In 1987 Fifteen cities in the north central U.S. reported record
high temperatures for the date, including International
Falls MN with a reading of 92 degrees. Mason City IA and
Waterloo IA reported record highs of 100 degrees.
Thunderstorms in the northeastern U.S. produced golf ball
size hail around Hamilton Square NJ, along with high
winds which tore the roof off a hospital causing a
million dollars damage. Averill Park NY was deluged with
1.64 inches of rain in fifteen minutes.
In 1988 Afternoon thunderstorms produced severe weather in the
Southern and Central Plains Region. Forrest NM was
deluged with 5.5 inches of rain in ninety minutes.
Temperatures soared into the 90s across much of the
eastern half of the nation, including New England.
Northern Illinois reported a record twenty straight days
of dry weather.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from the Southern
Plains to the Carolinas during the day and night, and
continued to drench parts of Texas and Oklahoma with
heavy rain. Oklahoma City reported 13.41 inches of rain
for the month, and Fort Worth TX reported 29.56 inches
for the year, a total more than 13 inches above normal.
Severe drought continued to rage across South Texas.

In 1903 The "Heppner Disaster" occurred in Oregon. A cloudburst
in the hills sent a flood down Willow Creek, and a twenty
foot wall of water swept away a third of the town in
minutes, killing 236 residents and causing 100 million
dollars damage.
In 1961 The temperature in Downtown San Francisco CA soared to
106 degrees to establish an all-time record for that
location.
In 1987 Thirty-two cities in the central U.S. reported record
high temperatures for the date. The high of 97 degrees
at Flint MI tied their record for June, and the high of
101 at Milwaukee WI marked their first 100 degree reading
in 32 years. Thunderstorms brought much needed rains to
South Texas, drenching McAllen TX with 3.2 inches in one
hour. A thunderstorm soaked Uncertain TX with 2.3 inches
of rain in one hour.
In 1988 Thirty cities in the eastern U.S. reported record high
temperatures for the date.
In 1989 Thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front produced

In 1662 A fast was held at Salem MA with prayers for rain, and
the Lord gave a speedy answer.
In 1879 McKinney ND received 7.7 inches of rain in 24 hours,
a state record.
In 1896 The temperature at Fort Mojave CA soared to 127 degrees,
the hottest reading of record for June for the U.S. The
low that day was 97 degrees. Morning lows of 100 degrees
were reported on the 12th, 14th and 16th of the month.
In 1953 Dust devils are usually rather benign weather phenomena,
however, two boys were injured by one near Prescott AZ.
One suffered a black eye, and the other had two vertabrae
fractured by wind-blown debris.
In 1957 East Saint Louis was deluged with 16.54 inches of rain in
24 hours, a record for the state of Illinois.
In 1987 Thunderstorms developing along a cold front produced
severe weather in the northwestern U.S. A tornado
damaged five homes and destroyed a barn near Salmon ID.
It lifted a metal shed 100 feet into the air, and
deposited it 100 yards away. Hail an inch and a half in
diameter caused ten million dollars damage to automobiles
at Nampa ID.
In 1988 Severe thunderstorms in the Central High Plains Region
spawned five tornadoes around Denver Co in just one hour.
A strong (F-3) tornado in southern Denver injured seven
persons and caused ten million dollars damage. Twenty-
six cities in the eastern U.S. reported record high
temperatures for the date. The high of 97 at Portland ME
was a record for June. A man in Denver survived a tornado
by clinging to a phone pole. He lost, however, both shoes,
a sock and shirt buttons.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced severe weather over the Southern
and Middle Atlantic Coast States. The thunderstorms
spawned 8 tornadoes, including strong (F-3) tornadoes
which injured three persons at Mountville PA and four
persons at Columbia PA. There were 111 reports of large
hail and damaging winds, including wind gusts to 80 mph
at Norfolk VA and Hogback Mountain SC.

history.
In 1944 A tornado in Sioux City IA traveled an odd course.
It spun in one place for about twenty minutes, made a U-
turn, traveled southeast for about three miles, then
traveled south, east, north, and finally east again.
In 1987 Temperatures soared above 100 degrees in the Upper
Midwest, reaching 104 degrees at Lincoln NE. Thunder-
storms produced wind gusts to 96 mph at Valley City ND,
and baseball size hail near Red Oak IA.
In 1988 After a brief respite, hot weather returned to the
Northern High Plains Region. Late night thunderstorms in
Montana produced wind gusts to 70 mph at Polson and north
of Lake Seeley.
In 1989 Daytime thunderstorms produced severe weather from
northern Florida to the Middle Atlantic Coast. The
thunderstorms spawned eight tornadoes, and there were 138
reports of large hail and damaging winds. Thunderstorm
winds gusting to 87 mph caused 20 million dollars damage
at Columbia SC. Strong thunderstorm winds killed one
person at McLeansville NC.
In 2014 A rare double tornado (two tornadoes side by side), blasted
through Pilger, Nebraska, causing widespread damage. Severe
storms extended into the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Iowa.

In 1859 Hot Santa Ana Winds at Santa Barbara, California, roasted
fruit on one side as they hung from trees.
In 1882 A tornado traveled more than 200 miles across the state
of Iowa killing 130 persons. The tornado touched down
about ninety miles west of Grinnell, and struck the town
and college around sunset, killing sixty persons, and
causing more than half a million dollars damage.
Traveling at nearly 60 mph, the tornado hit Mount
Pleasant about 11 PM causing another half a million
dollars damage.
In 1965 Holly CO was deluged with 11.08 inches of rain to
establish a state 24 hour rainfall record.
In 1987 Thunderstorms produced severe weather in the south
central U.S. Thunderstorms in Kansas produced wind gusts
to 76 mph at Lyons, and baseball size hail at Garden
City. The Edwards Aquifer, which supplies water to
San Antonio TX, reached a record level of 699.2 feet
following a record 18.43 inches of rain in thirty days.
Torrential rains between the mid May and mid June sent
8.8 million acre feet of water down the rivers of
southern Texas, the largest volume in 100 years of
records.
In 1988 Thunderstorms produced large hail and damaging winds in
Georgia and the Carolinas. Thunderstorm winds gusted to
75 mph at Eden NC.
In 1989 Unseasonably cool air, responsible for 37 record lows in
the central U.S. on the 15th and 16th, including a low of
33 degrees at Valentine NE on the 15th, overspread the
eastern U.S. ending a three day seige of severe weather.

Atlantic coast from Cape Cod to Nova Scotia. Eastport ME
reported wind gusts to 57 mph.
In 1958 Hailstones up to four inches in diameter killed livestock
as a storm passed from Joliet to Belfry in Carbon County MT.
In 1970 Wind and rain, and hail up to seven inches deep, caused
more than five million dollars damage at Oberlin KS.
In 1987 It was a hot day in the Upper Great Lakes Region. Nine
cities in Michigan and Wisconsin reported record high
temperatures for the date. The high of 90 degrees at
Marquette MI marked their third straight day of record
heat. Severe thunderstorm in the Northern and Central
High Plains Region spawned half a dozen tornadoes in
Wyoming and Colorado. Wheatridge CO was deluged with 2.5
inches of rain in one hour.
In 1988 Severe thunderstorms in eastern North Dakota and northern
Minnesota produced hail three inches in diameter and
spawned four tornadoes in Steele County. Thunderstorms
also produced wind gusts to 80 mph at Clearbrook MN.
In 1989 Unseasonably hot weather prevailed in the southwestern
U.S. In Arizona, afternoon highs of 103 at Winslow, 113
at Tucson, and 115 at Phoenix were records for the date.
In 2001 A tornado with winds of 200 mph tore through the town of
Siren, WI...damaging much of the Main Street. Ironically,
the towns warning siren did not operate, due to having
been struck by lightning in April...and it had been
scheduled for repair a week after the tornado struck.
In 2002 Elizabeth NJ was hit by a hailstorm that dumped hail
to 8 inches deep.

In 1835 A tornado tore through the center of New Brunswick NJ
killing five persons and scattering debris as far as
Manhattan Island. The tornado provided the first
opportunity for scientists to study firsthand the track
of such a storm.
In 1938 A cloudburst near Custer Creek MT (near Miles City)
caused a train wreck killing forty-eight persons. An
estimated four to seven inches of rain deluged the head
of the creek that evening, and water flowing through the
creek weakened the bridge. As a result, a locomotive and
seven passenger cars plunged into the swollen creek. One
car, a tourist sleeper, was completely submerged.
In 1972 Hurricane Agnes moved onshore near Cape San Blas FL with
wind gusts to 80 mph, and exited Maine on the 26th.
There were 117 deaths, mainly due to flooding from North
Carolina to New York State, and total damage was
estimated at more than three billion dollars. Up to 19
inches of rain deluged western Schuylkill County PA. The
rains of Hurricane Agnes resulted in one of the greatest
natural disasters in U.S. history. Agnes caused more
damage than all other tropical cyclones in the previous
six years combined (which included Celia and Camille).
In 1987 It was a warm June day, with plenty of thunderstorms east
of the Rockies. Lightning knocked out power at
Throckmorton TX, and ignited an oil tank battery.
A woman in Knox City TX was struck by lightning while in
her car, and a man was struck by lightning near his home
in Manatee County FL. Strong thunderstorm winds
overturned several outhouses near Bixby OK, but no
injuries were reported.
In 1988 Temperatures soared above 100 degrees in the central U.S.
for Father's Day. Fifteen cities reported record high
temperatures for the date. Severe thunderstorms in
Minnesota and Wisconsin produced softball size hail near
River Falls WI, and wind gusts to 80 mph at Menomonie WI.
In 1989 Fourteen cities reported record high temperatures for the
date as searing heat spread from the southwestern deserts
into the High Plains Region. Record highs included 98 at
Billings MT, 107 at Valentine NE, and 112 at Tucson AZ.
In 2012 Tropical Storm Chris formed in the north Atlantic. Only
before, in 1887, and 1959, has the third named storm in
the Atlantic Basin, formed earlier than this date.

In 1682 A major tornado ripped through southwestern Connecticut,
passing through Stratford, Milford, and New Haven, and
then into Long Island Sound.
In 1921 Circle MT received 11.5 inches of rain in 24 hours,
a record for the state. The town of Circle received a
total of 16.79 inches of rain that month to establish a
rainfall record for any town in Montana for any month of
the year.
In 1928 A farmer near Greensburg KS looked up into the heart of
a tornado. He described its walls as "rotating clouds
lit with constant flashes of lightning and a strong gassy
odor with a screaming, hissing sound".
In 1964 A squall line producing large hail swept through central
Illinois. A second squall line moved through during the
early morning hours of the 21st, and a third one moved
through shortly after dawn. The series of hailstorms
caused nine million dollars damage. Hailstones as large
as grapefruit caused heavy damage to trees, utility
lines, crops and buildings. The thunderstorms also
produced as much as five inches of rain in an eight hour
period.

severe weather in the Central High Plains Region.
Thunderstorms spawned four tornadoes in Colorado, and
produced wind gusts to 70 mph at Goodland KS.
In 1988 Thirty-eight cities in the central U.S. reported record
high temperatures for the date. Afternoon highs of 97 at
Flint MI and 104 at Chicago IL equalled records for the
month of June. Thunderstorms in North Dakota produced
baseball size hail near Kief, and wind gusts to 100 mph
near McGregor.
In 1989 An early morning thunderstorm produced wind gusts to
61 mph at Pierre SD, and hot thunderstorm winds raised
the temperature at Pierre from 86 at midnight to 96 at 1
AM to 104 degrees at 2 AM. Butte MT and Yellowstone Park
WY reported snow that afternoon.

In 1791 A huge hurricane wave carried off the coffin of a hated
count as he lay in state in Havana, never to be seen again.
In 1893 On the first day of summer the temperature at Dodge City
KS soared to 106 degrees during the midst of a blistering
heat wave. The heat wave initiated a severe three year
drought in the Central Plains Region. Ironically, at
about the same time, heavy rains in the Mississippi
Valley were causing the river to swell to its highest
level of record at New Orleans LA.
In 1919 Seven heavy coach cars of a moving train were picked up
and thrown from the tracks by tornado winds. A baggage
car was set down 30 feet away from the rest of the train.
In 1954 A severe hailstorm struck Wichita KS and vicinity causing
nine million dollars damage.
In 1972 Phoenix AZ was drenched with 1.64 inches of rain late on
the 21st and early on the 22nd to easily surpass their
previous June rainfall record of 0.95 inches. The total
for the month was 1.70 inches.
In 1987 A tornado destroyed 57 mobile homes at the Chateam
Estates trailer park northwest of Detroit MI killing one
person and injuring six others. Total damage was
estimated at 1.7 million dollars. Thunderstorms over
Lower Michigan also drenched the Saginaw Valley with up
to 4.5 inches of rain in less than six hours.
In 1988 The first full day of summer was a torrid one, with
100 temperatures reported from the Northern and Central
Plains to the Ohio Valley. Sixty-nine cities in the
north central U.S. reported record high temperatures for
the date. The high of 110 degrees at Sioux Falls SD was
an all-time record for that location. Highs of 103 at
Des Moines IA, 102 at Fort Wayne IN, 109 at Huron SD, 108
at Sioux City IA, and 101 at South Bend IN were records
for June.
In 1989 The first day of summer heralded snow in the northern and
central Rockies. Fifteen inches of snow was reported at
the summit of Mount Evans CO, and 18 inches was reported
west of Lander WY, at Dickensen Park. Heavy rain
continued in the eastern U.S. Huntsville AL reported a
record 11.65 inches for the month, compared to the 0.17
inch rainfall total in June 1988.

In 2022 Intense thunderstorms rolled through California, producing
more than 50,000 lightning strikes within 24 hours; the
most in a single day since 2017. The strikes started
multiple wildfires, and a woman walking her 2 dogs was
struck...both she and her dogs, were killed.
In 1932 Hailstones killed 200 in Hunan Province, China.
In 1947 Twelve inches of rain fell in forty-two minutes at Holt
MO establishing a world rainfall record. The record was
tied on January 24-25, 1956, at the Kilauea Sugar
Plantation in Hawaii, as their state record was
established with 38 inches of rain in 24 hours.
In 1972 Hurricane Agnes deluged Pennsylvania and New York with
torrential rains resulting in the most costly flood in
U.S. history. In the Middle Susquehanna Valley of
Pennsylvania, 24 hour rainfall amounts were generally
8 to 12 inches, with up to 19 inches in extreme
southwestern Schuylkill County. At Wilkes-Barre PA the
dike was breached destroying much of the town. Flooding
resulted in 117 deaths and 3.1 billion dollars damage.
In 1981 A young woman from Lubbock TX was struck by lightning.
The bolt of lightning struck just above her right
shoulder near her neck, and passed right to left through
her body, tearing her warm-ups, causing her tennis shoes
to explode, and lifting her two feet into the air.
In 1987 Thunderstorms in southern Texas produced wind gusts to
116 mph near Quemado. Thunderstorms in New York State
produced 5.01 inches of rain in 24 hours at Buffalo, an
all-time record for that location, and produced an inch
of rain at Bath PA. Fairbanks AK soared to 92 degrees,
a record for the date.
In 1988 Sixty-five cities in twenty-four states reported record
high temperatures for the date. Tucson AZ reported an
all-time record high of 114 degrees, surpassing the
previous record of 112 degrees established a day earlier.
Highs of 98 at Pittsburgh PA and 100 at Baltimore MD tied
records for the month of June.
In 1989 Record cold temperatures were reported in the High Plains
Region. Rapid City SD reported a record low of 39
degrees in contrast to their record high of 102 degrees
on the 20th.
In 2003 Tornadoes, hail up to 6 1/2 inches in diameter, and up to
a foot of rain pounded southern Nebraska and northern
Kansas. Four tornadoes struck in and around Deshler, KS,
about 75 miles southwest of Lincoln...causing heavy damage.
In Aurora, the huge hail dug craters in peoples yards, and
the largest hailstone was just 1/8 of an inch smaller than
the one that hit Coffeyville, KS in 1970. Most of the hail
averaged 4 1/2 inches in diameter. Ten miles east of
Deshler, in Hebron, radar estimated from 6 to 13 inches of
rain, resulting in widespread flooding.

In 1902 The temperature at Volcano Springs CA soared to 129
degrees to set a June record for the U.S.
In 1944 Four tornadoes killed 153 persons and caused five million
dollars damage in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and
Maryland. The tornadoes formed during the evening and
moved southeastward along parallel paths flattening
everything in their way. The town of Shinnston WV
was leveled, and was left with the majority of the
casualities. Until that time it was believed that
damaging tornadoes did not travel across mountainous
terrain.
In 1957 A few miles west of Fort Stockton TX, softball size hail
injured 21 persons unable to find shelter, mostly farm
laborers. Some livestock were killed.
In 1969 In Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee, a wall of water rising
to 7 feet tumbled, swirled and crushed houses, vehicles,
and street pavement.
In 1987 A massive hailstorm hit eastern Colorado causing an
estimated 60 to 70 million dollars damage. At La Junta
CO, hail as large as softballs caused 37 million dollars
damage.
In 1988 Thirty-four cities reported record high temperatures for
the date. The reading of 90 degrees at Bluefield WV
equalled their record for the month of June. The record
high of 104 degrees at Billings MT was their thirteenth
of the month.
In 1989 Six cities in the High Plains Region reported record low
temperatures for the date, including Sheridan WY with a
reading of 38 degrees. Showers and thunderstorms in the
eastern U.S. deluged New Castle County DE with 2.5 inches
of rain in one hour.
In 2012 Tropical Storm Debby formed in the Gulf Of Mexico, and
became the earliest 4th storm in the Atlantic Basin on
record...surpassing Hurricane Dennis of 2005, which
became a tropical storm on July 5, 2005.
In 2014 In Arkansas, from 2pm to 11pm, there were nearly 6300
cloud to ground lightning strikes in Arkansas. In Pulaski
County, between 5pm and 8pm, there were nearly 500 strikes.
The Searcy airport measured 1.10 inches of rain in only 11
minutes from 7:35pm to 7:46pm!!

In 1816 The cold weather of early June finally gave way to
several days of 90 degree heat in Massachusetts,
including a reading of 99 degrees at Salem.
In 1924 Six men at a rock quarry south of Winston-Salem NC sought
shelter from a thunderstorm. The structure chosen
contained a quantity of dynamite. Lightning struck a
near-by tree causing the dynamite to explode. The men
were killed instantly.
In 1951 Twelve inches of hail broke windows and roofs, and dented
automobiles, causing more than fourteen million dollars
damage. The storm plowed 200 miles from Kingmand County
KS into Missouri, with the Wichita area hardest hit. It
was the most disastrous hailstorm of record for the state
of Kansas.
In 1952 Thunderstorms produced a swath of hail 60 miles long and
3.5 miles wide through parts of Hand, Beadle, Kingsbury,
Miner and Jerauld counties in South Dakota. Poultry and
livestock were killed, and many persons were injured.
Hail ten inches in circumference was reported at Huron SD.
In 1987 Thunderstorms spawned six tornadoes in eastern Colorado.
Baseball size hail was reported near Yoder CO, and
thunderstorm winds gusting to 92 mph derailed a train
near Pratt KS. The town of Gould OK was soaked with
nearly an inch and a half of rain in just ten minutes.
In 1988 Forty-three cities reported record high temperatures for
the date. Valentine NE reported an all-time record high
of 110 degrees, and highs of 102 at Casper WY, 103 at
Reno NV, and 106 at Winnemucca NV were records for the
month of June. Highs of 98 at Logan UT and 109 at Rapid
City SD equalled June records. Lightning killed twenty-
one cows near Conway SC.
In 1989 Thunderstorms developing along a warm front produced
severe weather from Colorado and New Mexico to Kansas and
Nebraska. Thunderstorms spawned seven tornadoes, and
produced wind gusts to 80 mph at Wood River NE, and hail
three inches in diameter at Wheeler KS.
In 2001 A freak hailstorm struck Denver, Colorado...with many
reports of golfball sized hail. Many aircraft at the
Denver International Airport suffered severe damage.
In 2003 Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes raked the upper
Midwest, with widespread damage. Buffalo, Lake, MN,
about 70 miles west of Minneapolis, MN, was the hardest
hit...with a church, a grain elevator, and several
homes being damaged or destroyed. A 40 foot pine tree,
with its roots still attached, was seen 'pirouetting
in the sky, 200 feet in the air' from a tornado.
Damage also occured in Manchester, South Dakota.
In 2010 Hurricane Celia becomes a Category 5 Hurricane in the
Eastern Pacific with 160 mph winds. This ties her with
the strongest Eastern Pacific Hurricane on record in
June...with Hurricane Ava of 1973.

In 1888 Residents of New York suffered through a record heat
wave. Daily average temperatures were above 80 degrees
for fourteen straight days. The heat wave was a sharp
contrast to the severe blizzard in March of that year,
which buried the city under nearly two feet of snow.
In 1977 "The Human Lightning Conductor", park ranger Roy C.
Sullivan, was struck by lightning for the seventh
time. He was first hit in 1942, then again in 1970,
1972, 1973 and 1976.
In 1983 Record heat prevailed from Texas to Michigan. Alpena MI
hit 98 degrees.
In 1985 A spectacular early morning waterspout developed at 0520
MST from a stationary thunderstorm over the south end of
the Great Salt Lake in Utah. It was visible 20 miles
away, and lasted four minutes.
In 1987 Hot weather prevailed in the Pacific Northwest. Highs of
88 at Seattle WA, 103 at Medford OR, and 111 at Redding
CA were records for the date. Cloudy and cool weather
prevailed in the northeastern U.S. The high at Boston MA
was just 60 degrees.
In 1988 Thirteen cities in the southeastern U.S. reported record
high temperatures for the date. In Montana, the record
high of 102 degrees at Billings MT was their fifteenth of
the month, and the high of 108 degrees at Glasgow MT
equalled their record for June. Thunderstorms in the
Atlantic Coast Region produced wind gusts to 102 mph at
Tall Timbers MD.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from the Central
Plains to the Middle Mississippi Valley. There were 129
reports of severe weather during the day and night.
Thunderstorms in Kansas produced wind gusts to 90 mph at
Liberal, and hail four inches in diameter at Quinter.
Thunderstorms in Wisconsin spawned a tornado at Lake
Delton injuring four persons. Lightning struck and
killed a woman at Junction City KS who had gotten out of
her car to photograph the lightning.

In 1901 There was a rain of fish from the sky at Tiller's Ferry.
Hundreds of fish were swimming between cotton rows after
a heavy shower.
In 1915 The temperature at Fort Yukon AK soared to 100 degrees to
establish a state record.
In 1957 Hurricane Audrey smashed ashore at Cameron LA drowning
390 persons in the storm tide, and causing 150 million
dollars damage in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.
Audrey left only a brick courthouse and a cement-block
icehouse standing at Cameron, and when the waters settled
in the town of Crede, only four buildings remained. The
powerful winds of Audrey tossed a fishing boat weighing
78 tons onto an off-shore drilling platform. Winds along
the coast gusted to 105 mph. Oil rigs off the Louisiana
coast reported wind gusts to 180 mph. A storm surge
greater than twelve feet inundated the Louisiana coast as
much as 25 miles inland. It was the deadliest June
hurricane of record for the U.S.
In 1987 Thunderstorms moving out of Nebraska produced severe
weather in north central Kansas after midnight.
Thunderstorm winds gusting to 100 mph damaged more than
fifty camping trailers at the state park campground at
Lake Waconda injuring 16 persons. Thunderstorm winds
gusted to 80 mph at Beloit and Sylvan Grove.
In 1988 The afternoon high of 107 degrees at Bismarck ND was a
record for the month of June, and Pensacola FL equalled
their June record with a reading of 101 degrees.
Temperatures in the Great Lakes Region and the Ohio
Valley dipped into the 40s.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from the Ohio
Valley to western New England. Thunderstorm spawned six
tornadoes, and there were 98 reports of large hail and
damaging winds. Tropical Storm Allison spawned
six tornadoes in Louisiana, injuring two persons at
Hackberry. Fort Polk LA was drenched with 10.09 inches
of rain in 36 hours, and 12.87 inches was reported at the
Gorum Fire Tower in northern Louisiana.

In 1918 A single bolt of lightning struck 504 sheep dead in their
tracks at the Wasatch National Forest in Utah. Sheep
often herd together in storms, and as a result the shock
from the lightning bolt was passed from one animal to
another.
In 1986 Hurricane Estelle passed 120 miles south of the Hawaiian
Islands creating a ten to twenty foot surf. The large
swells resulted from a combination of high tides, a full
moon, and 50 mph winds. The hurricane also deluged Oahu
Island with up to 6.86 inches of rain on the 24th and
25th of the month.
In 1987 Barrow AK receives 1.38 inches in 24 hours, an all-time
record for that location. The average annual precip-
itation for Barrow is just 4.75 inches. (21st-22nd)
Thunderstorms in Montana produced 4 to 6 inches of rain
in Glacier County causing extensive flooding along Divide
Creek. Missoula MT received 1.71 inches of rain in 24
hours, a record for the month of July.
In 1988 Six cities in the south central U.S. reported record low
temperatures for the date, including Pueblo CO with a
reading of 48 degrees. Thunderstorms over the Atlantic
Coast Region drenched Wilmington NC with 6.49 inches of
rain in about eight hours.
In 1989 Showers and thunderstorms prevailed across the
southeastern third of the country. Afternoon thunder-
storms in Florida produced wind gusts to 86 mph at
Zephyrhills, and gusts to 92 mph at Carrollwood and Lutz.
Thunderstorm winds gusting to 69 mph at Crystal Lake
damaged nineteen mobile homes.
In 2003 For the third time in two weeks, severe thunderstorms
again roared across Arkansas and the mid-south, with
widespread wind damage. Memphis, TN had heavy damage
in the downtown area, with straight line winds of 100
miles per hour reported by storm spotters.
In 2010 Severe storms struck much of the northeast United States,
including 4 tornadoes in Maine, and 3 in Connecticut.
In 2017 Eight tropical cyclones simultaneously were in the North
Pacific Ocean (east and west of the International Date
Line, the first time that has happened in over 40 years.
In 2020 Tropical Storm Gonzalo becomes the earliest "G" storm in
the Atlantic Basin, beating Gert by 2 days.

In 1788 A weather diary kept by George Washington recorded that
the center of a hurricane passed directly over his Mount
Vernon home. The hurricane crossed eastern North
Carolina and Virginia before moving into the Central
Appalachians. Norfolk VA reported houses destroyed,
trees uprooted, and crops leveled to the ground.
In 1898 A two hour thunderstorm deluged Atlanta GA with
4.32 inches of rain. More than a foot of water flooded
Union Depot. Many street car motors burned out while
trying to run through flooded streets. It grew so dark
before the afternoon storm that gas lights were needed.
In 1923 Sheridan WY was drenched with 4.41 inches of rain, an all-
time 24 hour record for that location. Associated
flooding washed out 20 miles of railroad track. (22nd-
23rd)
In 1987 Thunderstorms produced a record ten inches of rain in six
and a half hours at Minneapolis MN, including 5.26 inches
in two hours. Flash flooding claimed two lives and
caused 21.3 million dollars damage. Streets in
Minneapolis became rushing rivers, parking lots became
lakes, and storm sewers spouted like geysers. A tornado
hit Maple Grove MN causing five million dollars damage.
Baseball size hail was reported at Olivia MN.
In 1988 Thunderstorms produced severe weather in Lower Michigan
and northern Ohio, over eastern sections of the Dakotas,
and over the Central High Plains Region. Showers and
thunderstorms soaked Wilmington NC with another two
inches of rain, following six and a half inches the
previous day.
In 1989 Morning thunderstorms in the central U.S. drenched
central Oklahoma with up to six inches of rain.
Afternoon thunderstorms produced wind gusts to 85 mph at
Fort Smith AR. Evening thunderstorms over Florida
spawned a tornado which touched down three times in south
Fort Myers causing nearly three quarters of a million
dollars damage.
In 2010 Torrential rains around Chicago caused massive flooding,
filling some basements with up to 4 feet of water. Also,
a new record for a hailstone in the U.S. was set at
Vivian, South Dakota. The stone was 8 inches in diameter,
and 18.625 inches in circumference, weighing in at one
pound, fifteen ounces!! Several hailstones from the same
severe thunderstorm exceeded 6 inches in diameter!!
In 2020 Tropical Storm Hanna is the earliest 8th storm on record
in the Atlantic Basin. The previous record was in 2005
when Harvey formed on August 3rd.

In 1886 Rain fell at Lawrence KS for the first time in four
weeks. Rain fell over much of the state of Kansas that
day relieving a severe drought which began in May. The
very dry weather ruined crops in Kansas.
In 1942 The temperature at Las Vegas NV hit 117 degrees to set an
all-time record for that location.
In 1947 One of the most powerful strokes of lightning ever
measured yielded 345,000 amperes of electricity in
Pittsburgh PA.
In 1952 The temperature at Louisville GA soared to 112 degrees to
establish a state record.
In 1980 Claudette, a weak tropical storm, deluged southeastern
Texas with torrential rains. The Houston suburb of Alvin
received 43 inches, a 24 hour record for the U.S.
In 1987 Twenty-one cities in the eastern U.S. reported record
high temperatures for the date. The high of 91 at
Beckley WV was their hottest reading in 25 years of
records, and marked their third straight day of record 90
degree heat. Bakersfield CA dipped to 60 degrees,
marking their eighth straight morning of record cool
weather.
In 1988 Afternoon and evening thunderstorms produced large hail
and damaging winds in Oklahoma, and over Nebraska and
Wisconsin. Thunderstorms produced wind gusts to 75 mph
at Brainerd NE.
In 1989 Afternoon thunderstorms produced some flash flooding in
New Mexico. Albuquerque NM was deluged with an inch and
a half of rain in forty minutes. Evening thunderstorms
soaked White Pine PA with two inches of rain in one hour.
Quiet weather prevailed across the rest of the nation, as
"Mother Nature" took a brief summer vacation.
In 1999 A waterspout on Bull Shoals Lake in northern Arkansas, came
onshore, and became a tornado at Diamond City before
dissipating. The tornado was weak, but caused considerable
damage to trailers and boat docks, as well as downing and
snapping trees. 26 people were injured by the tornado.
In 2003 (21st-24th) Typhoon Imbudo, with winds of 100 mph, and 30
foot waves, struck China's southern Guangdong province,
injuring 11 people. It was the worst storm to hit that area
in years. Days earlier, the storm had 150 mph winds, with
gusts to 190 mph, and 40 foot waves...striking Luzon in
in the Philippines...with at least 11 fatalities.
In 2010 At least 200 structures were destroyed, and 1100 damaged,
after a dam on an eastern Iowa lake failed...as a result
of recent heavy rainfall of over 10 inches in 12 hours in
some areas.

In 1891 The mercury hit 109 degrees at Los Angeles CA marking the
peak of a torrid heat wave.
In 1956 The Andrea Doria sank in dense fog near Nantucket
Lightship MA. The ship was rammed by the Swedish-
American liner, Stockholm, forty-five miles off the coast
of Massachusetts. Fifty-two persons drowned, or were
killed by the impact.
In 1986 Tremendous hailstones pounded parts of South Dakota
damaging crops, buildings and vehicles. Hail piled two
feet deep at Black Hawk and northern Rapid City. Hail an
inch and a quarter in diameter fell for 85 minutes near
Miller and Huron, piling up to depths of two feet.
In 1987 Sixteen cities in the eastern U.S. reported record high
temperatures for the date. Beckley WV equalled their all-
time record high of 91 degrees, established just the
previous day. It marked their fourth day in a row of
90 degree heat, after hitting 90 degrees just twice in
the previous 25 years of records. The water temperature
of Lake Erie at Buffalo NY reached 79 degrees,
the warmest reading in 52 years of records.
In 1988 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from central Kansas
to western Kentucky and southern Illinois during the day.
Thunderstorms produced tennis ball size hail at Union MO,
and winds gusts to 65 mph at Sedalia MO. Five cities in
Washington and Oregon reported record high temperatures
for the date. Medford OR hit 107 degrees.
In 1989 Early afternoon thunderstorms over west central Missouri
drenched the town of Ferguson with four inches of rain.
Early evening thunderstorms in Pennsylvania produced more
than two inches of rain north of Avella in one hour.
In 2000 An F-4 tornado devastated much of Granite Falls, MN.
1 was killed, 14 were injured, with 350 structures
either damaged or destroyed along a 12 mile path.

In 1819 Twin cloudbursts of fifteen inches struck almost
simultaneously at Catskill NY and Westfield MA.
Flash flooding resulted in enormous erosion.
In 1873 A Maine tornado took a life indirectly by knocking out a
bridge during the day. Later, a train plunged into the river
at dark.
In 1943 Tishomingo OK baked in the heat as the mercury soared to
121 degrees, a state record.
In 1960 The temperature at Salt Lake City UT hit 107 degrees, an
all-time record high for that location.
In 1987 Thunderstorms developing along a cold front produced hail
two inches in diameter in McHenry County IL, and wind
gusts to 70 mph at Auburn ME. A wind gust of 90 mph was
recorded at Blairstown NJ before the anemometer broke.
The high winds were associated with a small tornado. The
record high of 88 degrees at Beckley WV was their sixth
in a row.
In 1988 Thunderstorms produced large hail and damaging winds
in the MIddle Atlantic Coast Region, and in the south
central U.S. Eight cities in the northwestern and north
central U.S. reported record high temperatures for the
date. Salem OR hit 103 degrees.
In 1989 Morning thunderstorms produced heavy rain in southeastern
Texas, with more than three inches reported at the
Widllife Refuge in southwestern Chambers County. Evening
thunderstorms produced severe weather in Montana, with
wind gusts to 62 mph reported at Helena. Eight cities
from Maine to Minnesota reported record high temperatures
for the date, including Newark NJ with a reading of 99
degrees.
In 2012 Severe weather occurred across Arkansas, as well as from
the Ohio Valley into New England. In Arkansas, 4000 cloud
to ground lightning strikes were noted between 6pm and 7pm
Central Time. Entergy reported over 10,000 customers
were without power from the storms. In an hour, Newport got
1.03 inches of rain, with .46" of that falling in just six
minutes, and they also measured a wind gust of 64 mph.
Four miles west-northwest of Salem, 1 1/2 inches of rain
fell in just 45 minutes. At the Boone County Airport in
Harrison, a wind gust of 54 mph was observed. There were
several reports of trees and power lines down, as well as
wind damage across Arkansas. In the northeast U.S., a woman
in Pennsylvania was killed as a tree crushed a woman in her
car, as she sought shelter at a campsite. In Brooklyn, NY,
a 61 year old man died after lightning struck a church,
sending scaffolding crashing down on him. Possible
tornadoes occurred in Elmira, NY, and in Brookville, PA.
Several people were trapped inside a home in Vestal, NY,
because of downed trees. Damage was also reported in
Binghamton, NY...and there were extensive power outages;
with over 100,000 in Pennsylvania, and 95,000 in New York
without electricity, due to the storms.
In 2022 Record-breaking rainfall caused flash flooding in the St.
Louis, MO area, trapping cars, closing roads, and causing
at least one death.

In 1926 A hurricane came inland near Daytona Beach FL. The
hurricane caused 2.5 million dollars damage in eastern
Florida, including the Jacksonville area.
In 1939 The temperature at Lewiston ID hit 117 degrees to
establish an all-time record high for that location.
In 1943 On a whim, and flying a single engine AT-6, Lieutenant
Ralph O' Hair and Colonel Duckworth were the first to fly
into a hurricane. It started regular Air Force flights
into hurricanes.
In 1987 Thunderstorms in Minnesota spawned a tornado which moved
in a southwesterly direction for a distance of thirty
miles across Rice and Goodhue counties. Trees were
uprooted and tossed about like toys, and a horse lifted
by the tornado was observed sailing horizontally through
the air. Thunderstorms drenched La Crosse WI with 5.26
inches of rain, their second highest 24 hour total of
record.
In 1988 Hot weather prevailed in the north central U.S.
Williston ND reported a record high of 108 degrees.
Thunderstorms produced severe weather in the eastern
U.S., and in southeastern Texas. Richland County SC was
soaked with up to 5.5 inches of rain.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced locally heavy rains in the
southwestern U.S. Yuma AZ experienced their most severe
thunderstorm of record. Strong thunderstorm winds, with
unofficial gusts as high as 95 mph, reduced visibilities
to near zero in blowing dust and sand. Yuma got nearly
as much rain in one hour as is normally received in an
entire year. The storm total of 2.55 inches of rain was
a record 24 hour total for July. Property damage due to
flash flooding and high winds was in the millions.
Thunderstorms produced severe weather from Wisconsin and
northern Illinois to New England, with 103 reports of
large hail and damaging winds through the day.
Thunderstorms in Wisconsin produced hail three inches in
diameter near Oshkosh, and wind gusts to 65 mph at
Germantown.
In 2003 Thunderstorms brought heavy rain and significant flooding
to northeast Ohio and Pennsylvania. Over 100 people were
evacuated in Ohio, and several others in Pennsylvania.
A bridge collapsed in Hubbard Township (Trumbell County,
Ohio), and water was up to 6 feet deep in Youngstown, OH.

In 1898 The temperature at Prineville OR soared to 119 degrees to
establish a state record, which was tied on the 10th of
August at Pendleton.
In 1905 Heavy rain in southwestern Connecticut caused a dam
break, and the resulting flood caused a quarter of
a million dollars damage at Bridgeport. As much as
eleven inches of rain fell prior to the flood.
In 1981 Fifty cattle, each weighing 800 pounds, were killed by
lightning near Vance AL. The lightning struck a tree and
then spread along the ground killing the cattle.
In 1987 Thunderstorms produced severe weather from Minnesota to
Indiana and Illinois. A thunderstorm at Janesville WI
produced wind gusts to 104 mph which flipped over two
airplanes, and blew another 300 feet down the runway.
The northeastern U.S. experienced some relief from the
heat. Nine cities reported record low temperatures for
the date, including Saint Johnsbury VT with a reading of
42 degrees. Barnet VT reported a morning low of
33 degrees, with frost on vegetation.
In 1988 Afternoon and evening thunderstorms produced severe
weather in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Hail three inches in
diameter was reported south of Saint Cloud MN. Hot
weather prevailed in the western U.S. Fresno CA reported
a record thirteen straight days of 100 degree heat.
In 1989 Morning thunderstorms in the Upper Midwest produced more
than five inches of rain west of Virgil SD. Afternoon
and evening thunderstorms deluged the foothills and
adjacent plains of Colorado with heavy rain. Rains of
six to seven and a half inches fell in eight hours north
of Greeley. Hail and heavy rain caused several million
dollars damage in Weld County.
In 2003 Monsoon rains triggered landslides, snapped electricity
cables, and inundated a large part of South Asia. The
heaviest 1-day rain in 25 years pummeled Karachi,
Pakistan, with 4 inches of rain, leaving 14 dead.

In 1877 Hail as large as a man's fist perforated teepees of Crow
Indians in the Yellowstone Valley, and killed many ponies.
In 1949 The state record for Connecticut was established when the
town of Greenville registered an afternoon high of 102
degrees.
In 1965 The temperature at Portland OR reached 107 degrees to
equal their all-time record high.
In 1979 A forty-minute hailstorm bombed Fort Collins CO with
baseball to softball size hail. 2500 automobiles and
2000 homes were damaged, and about 25 persons were
injured, mainly when hit on the head by the huge stones.
A three month old baby died later of injuries.
In 1987 Afternoon highs of 105 at Aberdeen SD, 102 at Bismarck
ND, and 102 at Pueblo CO, were records for the date.
Pueblo CO reported just .09 inch of rain for the first
thirty days of the month.
In 1988 A dozen cities in the north central and northeastern U.S.
reported record high temperatures for the date. Downtown
Baltimore MD hit 103 degrees, marking a record eight days
of 100 degree heat for the month, and ten for the year.
The high of 101 degrees at Billings MT marked a record
seventeen days of 100 degree heat for the year.
Thunderstorms produced severe weather in the northeastern
U.S., with nearly fifty reports of large hail or damaging
winds in Pennsylvania and New York State. A tree fell on
a car at Erie PA injuring four persons.
In 1989 Morning thunderstorms over central Missouri deluged
Columbia with 5.98 inches of rain causing flash flooding.
Daytime thunderstorms in Kentucky drenched Paducah with
1.73 inches of rain in less than half an hour. Evening
thunderstorms in the north central U.S. produced wind
gusts to 78 mph east of Moccasin MT.

In 1949 Lightning hit a baseball game in Florida, digging a 20 foot
trench in the infield, and instantly killing the shortstop
and 3rd baseman.
In 1976 A stationary thunderstorm produced more than ten inches
of rain which funneled into the narrow Thompson River
Canyon of northeastern Colorado. A wall of water six to
eight feet high wreaked a twenty-five mile path of
destruction from Estes Park to Loveland killing
156 persons. The flash flood caught campers, and caused
extensive structural and highway damage. Ten miles of
U.S. Highway 34 were totally destroyed as the river was
twenty feet higher than normal at times.
In 1986 The temperature at Little Rock AR soared to 112 degrees.
Morrilton AR hit 115 degrees, and daily highs for the
month averaged 102 degrees.
In 1987 The deadliest tornado in 75 years struck Edmonton,
Alberta, killing 26 persons and injuring 200 others. The
twister caused more than 75 million dollars damage along
its nineteen mile path, leaving 400 families homeless.
At the Evergreen Mobile Home Park, up to 200 of the 720
homes were flattened by the tornado.
Afternoon highs of 106 at Aberdeen SD, and 102 at Ottumwa
IA and Rapid City SD, were records for the date. It
marked the seventh straight day of 100 degree heat for
Rapid City. Baltimore MD reported a record twenty-two
days of 90 degree weather in July. Evening thunderstorms
produced golf ball size hail at Lemmon SD and wind gusts
to 80 mph at Beulah ND.
In 1988 Twenty-one cities in the north central U.S. reported
record high temperatures for the date, including Sioux
City IA with a reading of 107 degrees. The reading of
105 degrees at Minneapolis MN was their hottest since
1936. Pierre SD and Chamberlain SD, with highs of
108 degrees, were just one degree shy of the hot spot in
the nation, Palm Springs CA.
In 1989 Overnight thunderstorms soaked eastern Kansas and western
Missouri with heavy rain, with 4.5 inches reported at
Nevada MO. Evening thunderstorms in Oklahoma produced
wind gusts to 75 mph at Covington. Six cities in the
north central U.S. reported record high temperatures for
the date, including Williston ND with a reading of 105
degrees.
In 2011 A rare tornado struck Blagoveshchensk, Russia, killing
one person, injuring nearly 30. Nearly 100 homes lost
lost their roofs, and 15o cars were damaged.

In 1954 Mount Rainier in Washington State was still covered with
sixteen inches of snow at the 5500 foot level following
a big snow season.
In 1985 A nearly stationary thunderstorm deluged Cheyenne WY with
rain and hail. Six inches of rain fell in six hours
producing the most damaging flash flood of record for the
state. Two to five feet of hail covered the ground
following the storm, which claimed twelve lives, and
caused 65 million dollars property damage.
In 1986 A powerful thunderstorm produced 100 mph winds and large
hail in eastern Kansas and southwestern Missouri causing
71 million dollars damage, and injuring nineteen persons.
It was one of the worst thunderstorms of record for
Kansas. Crops were mowed to the ground in places and
roofs blown off buildings along its path, 150 miles long
and 30 miles wide, from near Abilene to southeast of
Pittsburg.
In 1987 Record heat gripped parts of the Midwest. A dozen cities
reported record high temperatures for the date, including
Lincoln NE with a reading of 105 degrees, Moline IL with
a high of 103 degrees, and Burlington IA with a reading
of 102 degrees.
In 1988 Two dozen cities in the Upper Midwest reported record
high temperatures for the date, including La Crosse WI
with a reading of 105 degrees. Highs of 103 degrees at
Milwaukee WI and South Bend IN were records for the month
of August.
In 1989 Hurricane Chantal made landfall along the Upper Texas
coast about sunrise. Chantal deluged parts of Galveston
Island and southeastern Texas with 8 to 12 inches of
rain. Unofficial totals ranged up to twenty inches.
Winds gusted to 82 mph at Galveston, and reached 76 mph
in the Houston area. Tides were 5 to 7 feet high. The
hurricane claimed two lives, and caused 100 million
dollars damage.

thirty minutes in north central Kansas. One drift
measured 200 feet long, seventy feet wide and three feet
deep.
In 1975 Record heat gripped New England. Afternoon highs of 104
degrees at Providence RI, and 107 degrees at Chester MA
and New Bedford MA, established state records. The heat
along the coast of Maine was unprecedented, with highs of
101 degrees at Bar Harbor and 104 degrees at Jonesboro.
In 1987 Hot weather continued in the central U.S. Fifteen cities
reported record high temperatures for the date, including
Concordia KS with a reading of 106 degrees, and Downtown
Kansas City MO with a high of 105 degrees. Evening
thunderstorms produced severe weather in the Ohio Valley
and the north central U.S. Thunderstorms in South Dakota
produced wind gusts to 70 mph at Philip, and hail two
inches in diameter at Faulkton.
In 1988 Searing heat continued from the Middle and Upper
Mississippi Valley to the Middle and Northern Atlantic
Coast States. Twenty-six cities reported record high
temperatures for the date. Chicago IL reported a record
seven days of 100 degree heat for the year.
In 1989 Low pressure representing the remains of Hurricane
Chantal deluged north central Texas with heavy rain. Up
to 6.5 inches drenched Stephens County, and Wichita Falls
reported 2.22 inches of rain in just 1 hour. Bismarck, ND
reported a record warm morning low of 75 degrees, and
record hot afternoon high of 101 degrees, and evening
thunderstorms in North Dakota produced wind gusts to 78
mph at Lakota. Early evening thunderstorms in Florida
produced high winds which downed trees at Christmas.
In 2022 Southern Illinois was drenched by 8 to 12 inches of rain
in 12 hours. An area just south of Newton, IL, recorded
14 inches of rainfall in just 12 hours.

record breaking 3.01 inches in one hour at DFW airport.

In 1885 A tornado hit Philadelphia and Camden along its eight
mile path.
In 1970 Hurricane Celia struck the coast of Texas producing wind
gusts to 161 mph at Corpus Christi, and estimated wind
gusts of 180 mph at Arkansas Pass. The hurricane was the
most destructive of record along the Texas coast causing
454 million dollars damage, and also claimed 11 lives.
In 1987 A severe thunderstorm moved across Cheyenne WY about mid
afternoon. The thunderstorm produced hailstones up to
two inches in diameter causing more than 37 million
dollars damage. The eastern U.S. sweltered in the heat.
A dozen cities reported record high temperatures for the
date, including Paducah KY with a reading of 102 degrees.
Beckley WV established an all-time record high of 93
degrees.
In 1988 Thunderstorms developing ahead of a slow moving cold
front produced severe weather from the Central High
Plains to the Upper Great Lakes Region. Thunderstorms
around Fort Collins CO produced wind gusts to 74 mph
along with marble size hail. Sixteen persons were
injured in the storm, most of whom were accidently locked
out of their office building, having evacuated it when
the fire alarm went off, apparently triggered by
lightning.
In 1989 Thunderstorms representing what remained of Hurricane
Chantal drenched Wichita KS with 2.20 inches of rain
in four hours during the early morning. Thunderstorms
developing in the north central U.S. during the afternoon
produced wind gusts to 85 mph at Baudette MN, and
softball size hail at Lake Kabetogama, during the
vening. Jamestown ND reported a record hot afternoon
high of 103 degrees.
In 2004 (3rd-4th) Hurricane Alex, with 100 mph winds, lashed the
outer banks of the Carolinas. However, the center of the
storm remained offshore, sparing the outer banks from more
damage. Much of the same area was still recovering from
Hurricane Isabel that struck last year. Alex strengthened
to a peak of 120 mph on the 4th, but by then, the hurricane
was only a threat to shipping. However, he became the
strongest major hurricane on record to develop north of
38 degrees north latitude, with Hurricane Ellen in 1973
coming in second at 115 mph. These are the only 2 storms
to reach major hurricane strength at such a high latitude.
In 2011 Little Rock, Arkansas set an all time record high
temperature, with a reading of 114 degrees. The National
Weather Service in North Little Rock tied its all time
record high, with a reading of 111 degrees. Several
record high temperatures were set across Arkansas, and
Newport reached a scalding heat index of 126 degrees.

In 1890 Thunderstorms left four inches of hail covering the
ground in Adair and Union Counties in Iowa. The hail
drifted into six foot mounds, and in some places remained
on the ground for twenty-six days.
In 1918 Unusually hot weather began to overspread the Atlantic
Coast States, from the Carolinas to southern New England.
The temperature soared to an all-time record high of 106
degrees at Washington D.C., and Cumberland and
Keedysville hit 109 degrees to establish a state record
for Maryland. Temperatures were above normal east of the
Rockies that month, with readings much above normal in
the Lower Missouri Valley. Omaha NE reached 110 degrees.
In 1959 A bucket survey showed that thunderstorms dropped
16.70 inches of rain on parts of Decatur County IA. The
total was accepted as Iowa's 24 hour rainfall record.
In 1986 Evening thunderstorms produced wind gusts to 100 mph at
Winner SD damaging two hundred homes.
In 1987 Afternoon thunderstorms deluged Milwaukee WI with
6.84 inches of rain, including more than five inches in
two hours, breaking all previous rainfall records for the
city. Floodwaters were four feet deep at the Milwaukee
County Stadium, and floodwaters filled the basement of
the main terminal at the airport. Flooding caused 5.9
million dollars damage, and claimed the life of one
person. Death Valley CA reported a morning low of
97 degrees. A midday thunderstorm deluged Birmingham AL
with nearly six inches of rain in one hour.
In 1988 Severe thunderstorms produced large hail and damaging
winds in Pennsylvania and New York State. A cold front
crossing the northwestern U.S. produced wind gusts to 66
mph at Livingston MT.
In 1989 Thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front produced
severe weather from northwestern Texas to the Southern
Appalachians, and in the northeastern U.S. There were
136 reports of large hail or damaging winds during the
day and evening. Thunderstorms in the Southern Plains
produced tennis ball size hail northwest of Buffalo OK,
and wind gusts to 100 mph at Pampa TX.

In 1904 A flash flood near Pueblo CO washed a train from the
tracks killing 89 passengers. A bridge, weakened by the
floodwaters sweeping through the valley below, gave way
under the weight of the train dashing all but the
sleeping cars into the torrent drowning the occupants.
Rail service was frequently interrupted in the Rocky
Mountain Region and southwestern U.S. that summer due to
numerous heavy downpours which washed out the railroad
beds delaying trains as much as five days.
In 1918 Philadelphia PA established an all-time record with a
high of 106 degrees. New York City experienced its
warmest day and night with a low of 82 degrees and a high
of 102 degrees. Highs of 108 degrees at Flemington NJ
and Somerville NJ established state records for the month
of August.
In 1984 El Paso TX normally receives 1.21 inches of rain in
August. They got it in forty-five minutes, with four
more inches to boot, during a storm which left Downtown
El Paso under five feet of water.
In 1986 A rare outbreak of seven tornadoes occurred in New
England. One tornado carved its way through Cranston RI
and Providence RI causing twenty injuries. Rhode Island
had not reported a tornado in twelve years, and three
touched down in 24 hours.
In 1987 Morning thunderstorms drenched Goldsboro NC with 3.37
inches of rain. Late morning thunderstorms in Arizona
produced dime size hail, wind gusts to 50 mph, and two
inches of rain, at Sierra Vista.
In 1988 A dozen cities in the central U.S. reported record high
temperatures for the date, including Waco TX with a
reading of 107 degrees. The record high of 88 degrees at
Marquette MI was their 23rd of the year. Afternoon and
evening thunderstorms produced severe weather in
Nebraska, Minnesota and Wisconsin, with wind gusts to 81
mph reported at McCool NE.
In 1989 Forty cities in the central U.S. reported record low
temperatures for the date, including Valentine NE with a
reading of 40 degrees, and Belcourt ND with a low of 37
degrees. Martin SD was the cold spot in the nation with
a morning low of 30 degrees. Unseasonably hot weather
prevailed over Florida and Washington State, with record
highs of 100 at Daytona Beach FL, 101 at Walla Walla WA,
and 103 degrees at Hanford WA.
In 2003 A tornado touched down in the Riviera Beach area of Palm
Beach County, Florida. There was no warning of the
tornado, which caused a Pepsi plant to lose part of its
roof. Five hundred homes were damaged or destroyed. It
skipped right over Interstate 95 at rush hour...amazingly,
there were no injuries or fatalities from the tornado.
In 2011 Scattered severe thunderstorms developed across Arkansas,
with several reports of hail and wind damage. Golfball
sized hail fell near Russell, Arkansas, and a 77 mph wind
was recorded at Little Rock National Airport, from a
severe thunderstorm moving through the area.
In 2022 The weather monitoring stations run by Denver's Mile High
Flood District east of downtown near the zoo measured
Sunday night surged at 1.42 inches in 20 minutes, 1.3
inches in 15 minutes, and 1.76 inches in 26 minutes.

In 1881 A cloudburst and flash flood occurred at Central Springs
CO and Idaho Springs CO.
In 1882 An August snowstorm was reported by a ship on
Lake Michigan. A thick cloud reportedly burst on the
decks covering them with snow and slush six inches deep.
Snow showers were observed at shore points that day.
In 1983 The temperature at Big Horn Basin WY reached 115 degrees
to establish a state record.
In 1987 Thunderstorm rains in eastern Nebraska sent the Wahoo and
Ithica Rivers above flood stage. Thunderstorm rains in
western Iowa sent the Nishnabotna River over flood stage.
Up to seven inches of rain deluged the Council Bluffs
area Friday evening and Saturday morning. Thunderstorms
produced 4.4 inches of rain in three hours Friday
evening, along with golf ball size hail.
In 1988 Thunderstorms developing along a slow moving cold front
produced severe weather from central Kansas to southern
Wisconsin late in the day. Thunderstorms in Iowa
produced hail three inches in diameter at Vinton, and
produced wind gusts to 75 mph at Donohue and near Mount
Pleasant.
In 1989 A total of ninety-nine cities in the central and eastern
U.S. reported record low temperatures for the date,
including Alpena MI with a reading of 40 degrees. Mount
Mitchell NC was the cold spot in the nation with a
morning low of 35 degrees. Early evening thunderstorms
around Las Vegas NV produced wind gusts to 116 mph. The
high winds damaged or destroyed about 82 aircraft at
Henderson Sky Harbor Airport and McCarran International
Airport, causing fourteen million dollars damage.

In 1878 The second most deadly tornado in New England history
struck Wallingford CT killing 34 persons, injuring
100 others, and completely destroying thirty homes. The
tornado started as a waterspout over a dam on the
Quinnipiac River. It was 400 to 600 feet wide, and had
a short path length of two miles.
In 1969 A tornado hit Cincinnati OH killing four persons and
causing fifteen million dollars property damage.
The tornado moved in a southeasterly direction at
40 to 50 mph.
In 1987 Florida baked in the summer heat. Nine cities reported
record high temperatures for the date, including
Jacksonville with a reading of 101 degrees. Miami FL
reported a record high of 98 degrees.
In 1988 Tropical Storm Beryl deluged Biloxi with 6.32 inches of
rain in 24 hours, and in three days drenched Pascagoula
MS with 15.85 inches of rain. Afternoon and evening
thunderstorms produced severe weather in the Southern
Plains Region and over the Central High Plains Region.
Thunderstorms in Oklahoma produced wind gusts to 92 mph
at Harrah.
In 1989 Evening thunderstorms in Arizona deluged Yuma with record
torrential rains for the second time in two weeks. The
rainfall total of 5.25 inches at the Yuma Quartermaster
Depot established a state 24 hour record, and was nearly
double the normal annual rainfall. Some of the homes
were left with four feet of water in them. Seventy-six
cities in the south central and eastern U.S. reported
record low temperatures for the date. Lake Charles LA
equalled their record for August with a low of 61 degrees.
Canaan Valley WV was the cold spot in the nation with a
low of 32 degrees.

In 1856 The Isle Derniere (Last Island) disaster occurred off the
coast of Louisiana. A storm tide drowned 140 vacationers
as a five foot wave swept over Low Island during a
hurricane.
In 1882 Sandusky OH noted a four minute snow squall during the
morning, frost was reported in the suburbs of Chicago,
and a killing frost was reported at Cresco IA.
In 1898 The temperature at Pendleton OR climbed all the way to
119 degrees at set a state record.
In 1924 Colorado's deadliest tornado killed a woman and nine
children in one house along its twenty-mile path east
southeast of Thurman. Mennonite men had left the farm to
provide possible aid, as the 200-yard wide storm was
first seen while far away.
In 1936 The temperature soared to 114 degrees at Plain Dealing
LA, and reached 120 degrees at Ozark AR, to establish
record highs for those two states.
In 1980 Hurricane Allen came ashore above Brownsville TX dropping
fifteen inches of rain near San Antonio, and up to 20
inches in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Tidal flooding
occurred along the South Texas coast. Hurricane Allen
packed winds to 150 mph, and also spawned twenty-nine
tornadoes. Total damage from the storm was estimated at
750 million dollars.
In 1987 Unseasonably hot weather continued in the southeastern
U.S. Ten cities in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina
reported record high temperatures for the date. Macon GA
hit 101 degrees. A tropical depression deluged
southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana with
torrential rains.
In 1988 Citizens of Bluefield WV, where the Chamber of Commerce
provides free lemonade on days when the temperature warms
into the 90s, were able to celebrate their record high of
90 degrees. Eight other cities also reported record high
temperatures for the date, including Bismarck ND with a
reading of 102 degrees.
In 1989 Thirty-eight cities in the south central and southeastern
U.S. reported record low temperatures for the date,
including Asheville NC with a reading of 48 degrees, and
Victoria TX with a low of 63 degrees. Oklahoma City OK
reported a record cool afternoon high of 71 degrees, and
the daily high of 64 degrees at Raleigh NC established a
record for August. In Arizona, a record sixty-four day
streak of 100 degree days at Phoenix came to an end.
In 2003 (9th-10th) Record heat was observed across much of Europe,
with the degree high in London the first time that the
temperature had eclipsed the century mark there. Roth,
Germany had a record high of 105 degrees.
In 2012 At least 13 people were killed, and 20 wounded, when
lightning struck a makeshift mosque in a remote village
in northeast Bangladesh.
In 2020 An intense derecho traveled from southeast South Dakota
all the way to Ohio...770 miles in 14 hours. It flipped
trucks, smashed a grain elevator, and produced numerous
wind gusts over 100 mph in parts of Iowa. At Midway, IA,
a gust to 112 mph was noted. There was extensive
structural and tree damage about ten miles away in Cedar
Rapids, IA. Incredibly, at least half of the city's trees
were lost. The Warning Coordination Meteorologist (and
twenty three year veteran) at the National Weather Service
in the Quad Cities said this during an interview with a
local television station: "I can't recall a similar
incident. Usually the peak intensity is over relatively
quickly. With this they just persisted and persisted."
The state suffered large agricultural losses, with millions
of acres of corn flattened. The storms also tore through
Chicago, IL with 70 to 90 mph winds. Over a million power
outages occurred in the two state area. One location in
Iowa measured a gust to 140 mph, the equivalent of a
category 4 hurricane.

In 1940 A major hurricane struck Savannnah GA and Charleston SC
causing the worst inland flooding since 1607.
In 1944 The temperature at Burlington VT soared to an all-time
record high of 101 degrees.
In 1968 A young girl in a lake was injured when a dust devil near
Bristol, Connecticut, carried a 150 pound roof covering a
picnic area into the lake.
In 1980 Clouds and moisture from Hurricane Allen provided a brief
break from the torrid Texas heatwave, with daily highs
mostly in the 70s to lower 90s.
In 1987 An early evening thunderstorm in Wyoming produced hail up
to two inches in diameter from Alva to Hulett. Snow
plows had to be used to clear Highway 24 south of Hulett,
where hail formed drifts two feet deep.
In 1988 Moisture from what remained of Tropical Storm Beryl
resulted in torrential rains across eastern Texas.
Twelve and a half inches of rain deluged Enterprise TX,
which was more than the amount received there during the
previous eight months. Philadelphia PA reported a record
forty-four days of 90 degree weather for the year.
Baltimore MD and Newark NJ reported a record fourteen
straight days of 90 degree heat.
In 1989 One of the most severe convective outbreaks of record
came to a climax in southern California after four days.
Thunderstorms deluged Benton CA with six inches of rain
two days in a row, and flooding which resulted caused
more than a million dollars damage to homes and highways.
Thunderstorms around Yellowstone Park WY produced four
inches of rain in 20 minutes resulting in 15 mudslides.
Thunderstorms over Long Island NY drenched Suffolk County
with 8 to 10 inches of rain. Twenty-three cities in the
southeastern U.S. reported record low temperatures for
the date. It was, for some cities, the fourth straight
morning of record cold temperatures.
In 1999 A rare F2 tornado strikes downtown Salt Lake City, Utah;
causing extensive damage, injuries, and some fatalities.
It was the first tornado death ever in the state of Utah.

In 1778 A Rhode Island hurricane prevented an impending British-
French sea battle, and caused extensive damage in
southeastern New England.
In 1933 The temperature at Greenland Ranch in Death Valley CA hit
127 degrees to establish a U.S. record for the month of
August.
In 1936 The temperature at Seymour TX hit 120 degrees to
establish a state record.
In 1955 During the second week of August hurricanes Connie and
Diane produced as much as 19 inches of rain in the
northeastern U.S. forcing rivers from Virginia to
Massachusetts into a high flood. Westfield MA was
deluged with 18.15 inches of rain in 24 hours, and at
Woonsocket RI the Blackstone River swelled from seventy
feet in width to a mile and a half. Connecticut and the
Delaware Valley were hardest hit. Total damage in New
England was 800 million dollars, and flooding claimed 187
lives.
In 1987 Early afternoon thunderstorms in Arizona produced 3.90
inches of rain in ninety minutes at Walnut National
Monument (located east of Flagstaff), along with three
inches of pea size hail, which had to be plowed off the
roads.
In 1988 Fifteen cities in the northeastern U.S. reported record
high temperatures for the date. Youngstown OH reported
twenty-six days of 90 degree weather for the year,
a total equal to that for the entire decade of the 1970s.
In 1989 Thunderstorms were scattered across nearly every state in
the Union by late in the day. Thunderstorms produced
wind gusts to 75 mph at Fergus Falls MN, and golf ball
size hail and wind gusts to 60 mph at Black Creek WI. In
the Chicago area, seven persons at a forest preserve in
North Riverside were injured by lightning.

In 1831 A blue sun was widely observed in the southern states.
The phenomena was believed to have pre-staged
Nat Turner's slave uprising.
In 1919 High winds and heavy rain struck the Middle Atlantic
Coast Region. In New Jersey, winds gusted to 60 mph
at Atlantic City, and nine inches of rain fell at
Tuckerton. The wind and rain leveled crops and stripped
trees of fruit causing several million dollars damage.
In 1980 The afternoon high at New York City was just 89 degrees.
But there were fifteen days of 90 degree heat during the
month, their hottest August of record.
In 1985 Hail larger than golf balls, driven by 70 mph winds,
moved down crops, stripped trees, and broke windows, near
Logan KS. Road graders cleared three foot drifts of hail
on Kansas Highway 9 east of Logan.
In 1987 Thunderstorms deluged the Central Gulf Coast States with
torrential rains. Thunderstorms in Mississippi drenched
Marion County with up to 15 inches of rain during the
morning hours, with 12.2 inches reported at Columbia.
Floodwaters swept cars away in the Lakeview subdivision
of Columbia when the the Lakeview Dam broke. Flash
flooding caused more than three million dollars damage in
Marion County.
In 1988 A dozen cities in the northeastern U.S. reported record
high temperatures for the date. Lansing MI reported a
record 35 days of 90 degree weather for the year, Detroit
MI reported a record 37 days of 90 degree heat for the
year, and Williamsport PA reported a record 38 days of
90 degree weather for the year.
In 1989 Thunderstorms developing in a tropical airmass over the
northeastern U.S. soaked Connecticut and Massachusetts
with 4 to 8 inches of rain over the weekend, between the
11th and 13th of the month. Hartford CT received 7.70
inches of rain.
In 2004 (12th-15th) Florida became the target of a 1-2 tropical
weather punch...with Tropical Storm Bonnie hitting
Appalachicola with 50 mph winds at landfall...then,
with major Hurricane Charley as a Category 4, with 145
mph winds passing just to the west of Key West, and
coming ashore near Fort Myers at Charlotte Harbor on
the 13th. It was the first major hurricane to hit the
Florida west coast since Hurricane Donna in 1960.
Winds gusted to 127 mph at Punta Gorda, and to 105 mph
at Orlando. Western Cuba was hit with 105 mph winds
when Charley moved across. After crossing Florida, and
weakening to a minimal hurricane, Charley moved north,
hitting Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on the 14th. He
moved up the east coast as a Tropical Storm, struck
Long Island, NY, then finally dissipated off of the
England coast on the 15th. Preliminary damage costs
were at $15 billion, and over 2 million people across
Florida alone, were without power. Tragically, many
were left homeless, with many injuries and fatalities.
Major theme parks across Florida shut down ahead of
Charley...the first time that had been done since
Hurricane Floyd skirted eastern Florida in 1999.

In 1936 Temperatures across much of eastern Kansas soared above
110 degrees. Kansas City MO hit an all-time record high
of 113 degrees. It was one of sixteen consecutive days
of 100 degree heat for Kansas City. During that summer
there were a record 53 days of 100 degree heat, and
during the three summer months Kansas City received just
1.12 inches of rain.
In 1987 Slow moving thunderstorms deluged northern and western
suburbs of Chicago IL with torrential rains. O'Hare
Airport reported 9.35 inches in 18 hours, easily
exceeding the previous 24 hour record of 6.24 inches.
Flooding over a five day period resulted in 221 million
dollars damage. It was Chicago's worst flash flood
event, particularly for northern and western sections of
the city. Kennedy Expressway became a footpath for
thousands of travelers to O'Hare Airport as roads were
closed. The heavy rains swelled the Des Plaines River
above flood stage, and many persons had to be rescued
from stalled vehicles on flooded roads. (13th-14th)
In 1988 Eighteen cities in the northeastern U.S. reported record
high temperatures for the date, and the water temperature
at Lake Erie reached a record 80 degrees. Portland ME
reported a record fourteen straight days of 80 degree
weather. Milwaukee WI reported a record 34 days of 90
degree heat for the year. Afternoon and evening
thunderstorms resulted in about fifty reports of severe
weather in the northeastern U.S. One person was killed
at Stockbridge MI when a tornado knocked a tree onto
their camper.
In 1989 Afternoon thunderstorms in Illinois soaked the town of
Battendorf with 2.10 inches of rain in thirty minutes.
Evening thunderstorms in Montana produced wind gusts to
66 mph at Hobson.

In 1787 Tornadoes were reported in Connecticut, Rhode Island,
Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. Wethersfield CT was
hard hit by the tornado outbreak.
In 1946 Saint Louis MO was deluged with a record 8.78 inches of
rain in 24 hours.
In 1967 The "sundance fire" in northern Idaho was started by
lightning. Winds of 50 mph carried firebrands as much as
ten miles in advance to ignite new fires, and as a
result, the forest fire spread twenty miles across the
Selkirk Mountains in just twelve hours, burning 56,000
acres. The heat of the fire produced whirlwinds of flame
with winds up to 300 mph which flung giant trees about
like matchsticks.
In 1985 Near Whitehall, New York, lightning struck a farmhand.
En route to the hospital, his ambulance was also hit by
lightning.
In 1987 Thunderstorms developing ahead of a sharp cold front
produced severe weather in the Upper Midwest during the
afternoon and evening hours, with Minnesota and eastern
South Dakota hardest hit. A thunderstorm in west central
Minnesota spawned a tornado at Eagle Lake which killed
one person and injured eight others. A thunderstorm in
eastern South Dakota produced softball size hail at
Warner.
In 1988 Thirty five cities in twenty states in the north central
and northeastern U.S. reported record high temperatures
for the date, including Lamoni IA and Baltimore MD, where
the mercury hit 105 degrees. Temperatures 100 degrees or
above were reported in twenty-two states. Pierre SD was
the hot spot in the nation with a high of 114 degrees.
Bluefield WV reported eight straight days of record heat.
In 1989 Evening thunderstorms in eastern New Mexico produced wind
gusts to 66 mph at Clovis. Evening thunderstorms in West
Texas produced baseball size hail around Hereford,
Dimmitt, Ware and Dalhart.
In 2003 (9th-15th) Widespread flooding occurred across the eastern
United States from Florida to Maine. Numerous reports of
roads closed, roads and bridges washed out, mud and rock
slides, vehicles stranded, and basement flooding were
noted. Isolated evacuations occurred in North Carolina,
Georgia, Ohio, and New Hampshire. Many areas got from 2
to 3 inches of rain, while parts of West Virginia got
over 7 inches of rain.

In 1925 During the late morning hours a severe hailstorm struck
southeastern Iowa completely destroying crops along a
path six to ten miles wide and 75 miles long. The hail
also injured and killed poultry and livestock, and caused
a total of 2.5 million dollars damage. The hailstorm
flattened fields of corn to such an extent that many had
to leave their farms in search of other work. It was one
of the worst hailstorms of record for the nation.
In 1983 Hurricane Alicia ravaged southeastern Texas. The
hurricane caused more than three billion dollars property
damage, making it one of the costliest hurricanes in the
history of the U.S. Just thirteen persons were killed,
but 1800 others were injured. The hurricane packed winds
to 130 mph as it crossed Galveston Island, and spawned
twenty-two tornadoes in less than 24 hours as it made
landfall.
In 1987 Thirteen cities in the eastern U.S. reported record high
temperatures for the date, including Orlando FL with a
reading of 98 degrees, and Portland ME with a high of 94
degrees. Newark NJ reached 90 degrees for the thirty-
sixth time of the year, their second highest total of
record.
In 1988 Twenty-two cities, from the Carolinas to the Upper Ohio
Valley, reported record high temperatures for the date,
pushing the total number of daily record highs since the
first of June above the 1100 mark. Afternoon highs of
102 at Greensboro NC and 105 at Raleigh NC equalled all-
time records. Evening thunderstorms in Montana produced
wind gusts to 75 mph at Scobey.
In 1989 Thunderstorms over the Middle Atlantic Coast Region
and the Upper Ohio Valley produced torrential rains in
eastern Virginia during the late morning and afternoon
hours. Totals ranged up to 12 inches at Yorktown.
Williamsburg VA was deluged with 10.78 inches of rain
between 6 AM and 10 AM, with 6.72 inches reported in just
two hours. Flash flooding caused nearly twelve million
dollars damage in Accomack County VA. Early evening
thunderstorms in the Central High Plains Region produced
walnut size hail and wind gusts to 80 mph around Casper WY.
Thunderstorms produced locally heavy rains in the
Yellowstone Park area, causing fifteen mudslides.
In 2011 Severe thunderstorms caused widespread damage at Omaha,
Nebraska. At the airport, baseball sized hail damaged
several planes, and portions of an airport concourse.
The downburst winds of 100 mph pushed a jetway into a
plane, injuring a pilot, and another pilot was injured
after being struck by hail. Many vehicles at the airport
also suffered hail damage. The airport was closed for a
time, due to the severe weather, affecting over 2700
passengers. Elsewhere, the third massive dust storm in
months hit the Phoenix, Arizona area. This storm was
as much as 60 miles wide and 4000 feet high. The airport
was once again closed for a time. Numerous traffic
accidents occurred due to the low visibility.

In 1788 A small but powerful hurricane inflicted great havoc upon
forests along a narrow track from New Jersey to Maine.
A similar storm track today would cause extreme disaster
in the now populated area.
In 1969 'Never say die' Camille let loose a cloudburst in
Virginia resulting in flash floods and landslides which
killed 151 persons and cause 140 million dollars damage.
Massies Hill VA received 27 inches of rain.
In 1986 The temperature at San Antonio TX soared to an all-time
record high of 108 degrees.
In 1987 Thunderstorms moving out of southeastern Nebraska spread
severe weather into eastern Kansas and western Missouri
during the day. Thunderstorms in Nebraska produced hail
three inches in diameter at Albion, and high winds which
downed a large tent at Waterloo injuring a dozen persons.
Thunderstorms in Kansas produced baseball size hail
northwest of Topeka, and wind gusts to 80 mph at Fulton.
Ten persons were injured in a thunderstorm at Princeton
KS, and damage to crops in southern Franklin County KS
was estimated at 3.5 million dollars.
In 1988 Raleigh NC reported a record hot temperature reading
of 103 degrees. Afternoon thunderstorms in Oklahoma
produced wind gusts to 75 mph in southern Pittsburgh
County. Thunderstorms in Indiana produced 4.50 inches of
rain at Morgantown.
In 1989 Early morning thunderstorms deluged southeastern Delaware
with six to ten inches of rain in four to six hours, with
local reports of 13 to 20 inches of rain. Twenty-six
major roads were closed or damaged, and fourteen bridges
were washed out. Flooding caused nearly four million
dollars damage to local businesses.
In 1991 Hurricane Bob roared ashore at Newport, Rhode Island.
2.1 million homes and businesses lost power.

In 1886 The town of Indianola TX was completely destroyed by a
hurricane, and never rebuilt.
In 1910 The "big blow up" of forest fires finally came to an end
in Idaho. A record dry August fueled 1736 fires which
burned three million acres destroying six billion board
feet of timber. The fires claimed the lives of 85
persons, 78 of which were fire fighters, and consumed the
entire town of Wallace. The smoke spread a third of the
way around the world producing some dark days in the U.S.
and Canada. The forest fires prompted federal fire
protection laws.
In 1987 Half a dozen cities in the Central Plains Region reported
record high temperatures for the date, including Pueblo
CO with a reading of 102 degrees, and Goodland KS with a
high of 104 degrees. Hill City KS reached 106 degrees.
In 1988 Sheridan WY reported a record hot temperature reading of
100 degrees. Evening thunderstorms produced golf ball
size hail near Fortuna ND, and wind gusts to 70 mph near
Webster SD.
In 1989 Early morning thunderstorms produced heavy rain in
southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma, with up to
six inches reported around Tulsa OK. Some roads in the
Tulsa area were closed by water 10 to 12 feet deep.
Evening thunderstorms produced severe weather in northern
Oklahoma and southern Kansas. Thunderstorms produced
winds gusts to 75 mph in Major County OK, and hail two
inches in diameter at Jennings KS.
In 1991 In South Dakota, a 3 AM electrical storm was so bright,
a civil defense director was able to drive 10 minutes
without his headlights.

In 1814 A tornado struck Washington, DC. While causing damage to
much of the city, the damage blocked exit routes from
invading British Troops that came into the city the day
before. The torrential rains from the severe thunderstorms
put out the raging fires that had been set by British
troops the day before.
In 1885 A severe hurricane struck South Carolina causing
1.3 million dollars damage at Charleston.
In 1940 New Jersey experienced its coldest August morning of
record, with lows of 32 degrees at Layton and
Charlotteburg.
In 1987 Morning thunderstorms produced heavy rain in eastern
Nebraska and southwestern Iowa. Stanton IA reported
10.50 inches of rain. Water was reported up to the
handle of automobiles west of Greenwood NE. Rainfall
totals for a two day period ranged from 7 to 14 inches
across southwestern Iowa. Crop damage was in the
millions for both states. Subsequent flooding of streams
in Iowa the last week of August caused millions of
dollars damage to crops, as some streams crested ten feet
above flood stage.
In 1988 Seven cities in California reported record high
temperatures for the date, including Sacramento with
an afternoon reading of 104 degrees. Thunderstorms
produced locally heavy rains in Arizona. Chino Valley
was drenched with 2.50 inches of rain in just thirty
minutes washing out a couple of streets in town.
In 1989 Morning thunderstorms drenched Spencer IN with 4.10
inches of rain in three hours causing extensive street
flooding. Evening thunderstorms in eastern Kansas
produced up to six inches of rain around Emporia, and
four inches of rain in just forty-five minutes near
Parsons, and also produced wind gusts to 70 mph at
Lake Melvern.
In 2017 Powerful Hurricane Harvey became a Category 4 hurricane
with 130 mph winds prior to landfall at Rockport, Texas.
It was the first Category 4 Hurricane to hit the U.S.
since Charley struck western Florida in 2004...and the
first Category 4 hurricane to hit Texas since Carla in
1961. He was forecast to dump from 3 to 5 feet of rain
Cfall in several areas of Texas and Louisiana, as the
steering currents around him collapsed, and he would
move very little in south Texas for several days.

In 1883 Krakatoa Volcano exploded in the East Indies. The
explosion was heard more than 2500 miles away, and every
barograph around the world recorded the passage of the
air wave, up to seven times. Giant waves, 125 feet high
and traveling 300 mph, devastated everything in their
path, hurling ashore coral blocks weighing up to 900
tons, and killing more than 36,000 persons. Volcanic ash
was carried around the globe in thirteen days producing
blue and green suns in the tropics, and then vivid red
sunsets in higher latitudes. The temperature of the
earth was lowered one degree for the next two years,
finally recovering to normal by 1888.
In 1949 A hurricane made landfall at Delray Beach. Winds reached
153 mph at the Jupiter Lighthouse before the anemometer
failed. The hurricane caused 45 million dollars damage
to crops. The hurricane also caught the Georgia and
South Carolina coast resulting in another two million
dollars damage.
In 1965 Severe thunderstorms associated with the invasion of
arctic air spawned tornadoes and produced 100 mph winds
in the Chicago area.
In 1976 A weak tornado touched down briefly in the Hockley Hills
near Kiana AK, about 29 miles north of the Arctic Circle.
In 1987 Showers and thunderstorms drenched northern Illinois
during the morning and afternoon hours pushing August
rainfall totals for Chicago, Moline and Peoria to new all-
time highs for any month of the year. By the end of
August, Chicago had received 17.10 inches of rain, which
easily surpassed their previous record of 14.17 inches
established in September 1961.
In 1988 A dozen cities in Texas, Colorado and California reported
record high temperatures for the date, including highs of
100 at Pueblo CO, 106 at Wichita Falls TX, and 109 at
Redding CA. Afternoon thunderstorms in Utah deluged the
town of Beaver with more than an inch of rain in twenty
minutes.
In 1989 Anchorage AK was soaked with a steady rain, and the
24 hour total of 4.12 inches smashed their previous
24 hour precipitation total of 2.10 inches. It also
pushed their rainfall total for the month past the
previous August record.
In 1992 Hurricane Andrew made its second US landfall west-southwest
of Morgan City, Louisiana.
In 2003 (23rd-27th) Starting as a Tropical Storm, Ignacio became
the latest first hurricane for the season in the Eastern
Pacific basin. At its peak, it had 105 mph winds, but
drifted slowly toward Baja California, finally coming
on the 26th as a minimal hurricane. Rainfall totals were
over 20 inches in many places, with major flooding and
mudslides across areas of Baja California and northwest
Mexico, before dissipating over Baja California on the
27th. Typhoon Krovanh hit the Chinese province of Hainan
with heavy rains and strong winds, resulting in widespread
flooding, damage, and injuries.
