Gemini is a minimalist, decentralized internet protocol designed as an alternative to HTTP and Gopher, focusing purely on plain text, privacy, and distraction-free browsing.”
Websites on the Gemini network are called "capsules" rather than webpages. Instead of HTML, they use a lightweight, Markdown-like markup format called Gemtext (which has the unofficial MIME type text/gemini). A Gemtext file is incredibly simple and strictly formats links, so they appear on their own separate lines.
Because Gemini is an alternative to standard web protocols, you cannot view Gemini capsules directly in modern web browsers like Chrome or Firefox. To explore Gemini Capsules, you will need to use a dedicated Gemini client.
