They got the rights to show which one, Gatchaman or BotP? That seems weird that they would do that to either of them, unless there was some legal reason they had to.
I'm guessing BotP, though when I was first watching it on TV I'm wanting to say it was called "G-Force".
Yeah, that was another name for Battle of the Planets. Gatchaman was the original Japanese version of the show. When I was watching BotP/G-Force in the 1970s/80s, it had already been overdubbed and edited for US broadcast. I forget the name of the company, but the company that imported it made that decision.
They also added the scenes with the robot "narrator" that lived in the underwater "headquarters." That character was exclusive to the US repackage. Supposedly, that was done to help fill gaps in the edited story-lines and to also capitalize on the Star Wars craze. As Star Wars had R2D2 and C3PO, the importer wanted to add a robot with attitude to the BotP cast.
In addition to overdubbing the voices, several stories were changed significantly. That is why I thought it would be neat to watch an episode of one, and then the other, to see how different the stories were. There were a few episodes of Gatchaman that were not repackaged into BotP, for whatever reason, and were not shown here.
